“The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity” (Psalm 94: 11 KJV).
A person says to their companion, “A penny for your thoughts,” when they see a thoughtful look on their face and are curious about what they’re thinking. Their companion then speaks their thoughts without charging anything.
I buy books by long-departed saints that God used so I can read their thoughts in the hope that it will help shape my thought life and, naturally, my practical life. I don’t buy books by modern writers because their books don’t have that spiritual aura or afterglow that the books of earlier saints have. And modern writers, for some reason, miss the mark.
Some of these books, with their priceless thoughts of long-departed saints, can be found in old bookstores and bought for a few pennies. Other times, you will pay a pretty penny for them.
Some people read their books from an electronic device, but I like the paper book. I like the actual book because I like to write my thoughts in the margin and underline some of their important thoughts. And if they help me, they become my friends, and I put them on the shelf with my other friends.
When I buy a Bible (KJV), I’m buying a book with God’s thoughts in it. Thankfully, the price of a Bible is still reasonable. Some people have their Bible in an electronic device, but I like holding and reading the paper and leather copy because I like to write my thoughts in the margin and underline or highlight some of its verses. I just like handling the Word of God and consider it a friend to help me to God.
The Bible is a revelation of God’s mind to mankind. It is not a complete revelation of God’s mind, but enough of a revelation that man can know God and walk in His fellowship.
I wouldn’t pay for some people’s thoughts; not even a penny. I might pay them to keep their mouths shut because they have nothing to say that’s of any value.
Thoughts have moral value—“The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord” (Pro. 15:26)—“The thoughts of the righteous are right” (Pro. 12:5). Which one would you give a penny for their thoughts?
