Decatur County 4-H Celebrates National 4-H Week

Georgia 4-H empowers youth to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society by establishing personal and sincere relationships, learning life and leadership skills, and enhancing community awareness. During National 4-H Week, Oct. 1-7, Georgians will celebrate all the exceptional things these 4-H’ers accomplish as they reflect on more than more than 100 years of making the best better!

Scott Ross Hayes, Champion 7th grade lamb showmanship and 3rd place in market lamb class.

Levi Peralta, 4th place in 2nd grade lamb showmanship and 6th place in market lamb class.

Georgia 4-H programming, part of University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, is based on research from the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and other UGA colleges. Georgia has one of the largest state 4-H programs in the country.

The Decatur County Shotgun Junior Team of Winston Brock, Charlie Smith, Crosby Giddens, Judson Dollar, and Gavin Hughes placed 1st at the District Qualification Match.

Forestry Judging Junior Team member Skye Clements competed at the 4-H Southwest District Forestry Judging Contest.

The national theme is “I Love 4-H” and there is so much to love! This exceptional program really does have something for everyone. Our roots are in agriculture, and our branches now include science, technology, healthy living, civic engagement, and so many more. From livestock show teams, judging teams, and summer camp to environmental education and leadership development programs, we learn by doing. Decatur County 4-H youth perform community service, raise and train livestock, conduct research, compile portfolios of their accomplishments and learn public speaking skills through oral presentations. 4-H believes that young people, in partnership with adults, can play a key role in creating a more promising future for youth, families and communities across the country.
