God is Angry with the Wicked

By James H. Cagle

“God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready. He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; and ordained his arrows against the persecutors” (Psalm 7: 11-13 KJV).

We do the wicked an injustice when we tell them that God loves them, which He does, but don’t tell them that God is angry with them as well. If they do not repent and turn to God He is actively planning their demise.

What angers us tells a lot about us. Everyone doesn’t get angry for the same reason. Injustice, cheating, stealing, lying, and dishonesty should make us all angry but doesn’t anger some in the slightest. A Christian will be angry at all manner of sin while the sinner will delight in his sinning.

Most of the signs in front of the churches read “God is Love.” I’ve yet to see a church sign that read “God is angry.” It’s true that God is love but it’s also true that God is holy and therefore must be angry with sin. It’s been said that God hates sin but loves the sinner. This is not true. God does hate the sinner because he is the source of sin; “The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity” (Ps. 5: 5). God hates the sinner because of his sin and not because of himself. God loves the sinner to, because He knows that man is capable of holiness. God showed His love for the sinner by sacrificing His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. He showed His anger or wrath for sin through the suffering Jesus went through for the sinner. Jesus did not change God’s view of sin. Jesus, therefore, became hated of the Father because of our sin that He bore. And as God hated sin — “It pleased the Lord to bruise him” (Is. 53: 10a) — God forsook His Son, because God will always forsake sin.

God’s anger is perpetual toward the sinner. He’s is angry with the wicked 24/7. It is only because God is merciful and longsuffering that God doesn’t destroy him immediately. But God has plans and is prepared to destroy him if he doesn’t repent.

God loves righteousness and hates iniquity (Heb. 1: 9). God is a holy God and a righteous Judge and He will approve the righteous and in anger judge the wicked. The Scriptures say at least six times that God “is slow to anger” (Neh. 9: 17; Ps. 103: 8; 145: 8; Joel 2: 13; Jonah 4: 2; Nah. 1: 3). But God does eventually get angry and is then longsuffering because He takes no delight in the death of the wicked but desires that he turn from his evil ways to Him for salvation (Ezek. 33: 11; 2 Peter 3: 9).

How many more sinners would come to Christ for salvation if instead of being told God loves them, were told that God is angry with them because they’ve rejected His great love?

  1. God is angry with the wicket article was very interesting. I had just had a conversation with my sis n law about the wickedness of the world. She pointed out about TikTok and how many social media platforms are wicket and don’t give God Glory. I shared that if we continue to share the Gospel on these platforms, someone just might start to think and repent!

    1. There are 10’s of thousands of churches on tiktok, as well as believers testifying. Maybe your sister in law is just looking at the wrong tiktoks. Seek and you shall find, it goes both ways. Same with facebook, instagram, and any other social media. If you’re using it wrong, that’s on you.
