Charles Buford Matthews III was born September 18, 1967, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Charles & Dottie Butler Matthews. Shortly after high school, Chuck began a career in construction and fabrication that lasted 40 years. He married the love of his life, Ginger, and they made their home in Bainbridge. Chuck was a Christian by faith and tried to live every day as an example of how to love others.
Chuck was a hardworking man taking pride in building things that would last. There wasn’t much he couldn’t build, repair, or weld. He was a simple man with strong convictions and no gray areas. You always knew where he stood, and he lived by the values he believed in whether you agreed or not.
Chuck’s happiest days were spent outdoors hunting and fishing, and he was known as an excellent shot. When the day was done, he enjoyed picking up his guitar sitting by the fire. He was the kind of friend everyone hoped to have. If you needed him, he was there without hesitation, regardless of the circumstances and without question. Chuck’s famous words: “Plain & simple,” and “God made dirt, and dirt don’t hurt,” reflected his practical outlook on life and the grit with which he faced the world.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Ginger W. Matthews; his children, Chad & Jessica Matthews and Christopher Matthews; his grandchildren, Alayna, Stetson, and Sadie; his great-nephews & niece, Adrian, Nick, and Summer; his sisters, Gail Grubbs West (Walter) and Priscilla Southall (Donny); his sister-in-law, Robin Thomas; and a host of extended family. In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his brother, David Thomas, and brother-in-law, Danny Ray Grubbs.
