A Passive Mind

“And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever” (1 Chron. 28: 9 KJV).

Someone said, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” That would mean to have a passive mind; a mind that is not engaged in any profitable labor and is not producing or creating anything. It has become inert and inactive. Passive literally means “suffering action upon oneself, hence willingly submissive or inactive.”

A passive mind is a mind that doesn’t think for itself but instead follows the herd mentality. A passive mind that isn’t engaged in any profitable labor and is nonproductive is a mind steeped in worry.

A passive mind will also be accompanied by a passive will. A person with a passive mind who doesn’t think for themselves will have a passive will that can’t act on its own.

But what is the mind? The mind is not a physical organ. It is not the brain. It is the person themselves. It is the spiritual man, the inner man, the inner heart. All the activities and attributes that science gives to the brain the Bible gives to the heart, the mind, the spiritual man.

Satan loves a passive mind and a passive will. For a person who is passive and not directing and controlling and actively using their mind and will, in some manner, can be controlled by Satan. A Christian that has a passive mind and will and is not engaged in forming the mind of Christ and shaping their thoughts as the Bible instructs can be influenced, if not controlled, by Satan. They can be his slave and captive.

Passivity of mind and will come as a result of spiritual laziness. We are lazy and do not cooperate and participate with the Holy Spirit in making us more like Christ. The people who live in constant fear and worry usually have a very passive mind. And their passive mind keeps them chained to their bad circumstances. The way to become free is by becoming active in our mind and will and begin to have thoughts God wants us to think and to perform the actions as He commands. To overcome this passivity, one must begin using their mind again and begin producing and creating the mind and life of Christ (2 Cor. 10: 5; Phil. 2: 5; 4: 8).

The way to escape passivity is to stop being lazy spiritually and energizing our mind by activating our thoughts and learning how to think again by meditating on God’s Word. Then, we follow through with initiating our will to live wholly for the Lord.

The way to escape this passivity is to begin obeying God again. Get busy doing something for God’s glory and honor.

  1. very insightful and helpful to the Body of Christ, we are pressing in more and more each and every day to be completely obedient and submissive to the Lord. We respond to His amazing Grace in our Savior and Deliverer Jesus with faith that works by love. I am hoping I can share some insight from your blog with our class (small group of 20) who are praying to be used of God to heal the brokenhearted and to evangelize.
