Happiness Through Holiness

“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD” (Psalm 119: 1 KJV).

Everyone is seeking happiness. Most are actually in the pursuit of unhappiness because they’re seeking happiness from things that will never bring them that in which they desire.

True happiness comes through holiness. According to God’s Word, a person cannot be truly happy that is not truly holy.

The word “blessed” actually means happy. The word “undefiled” means to not be stained or blotted by something that is filthy.

This true happiness is only available to the Christian because only the Christian can fulfill the conditions for this happiness. The condition is that they walk in the way of life in obedience to the “law of the LORD” or the Word of God. In other words, happiness comes as a Christian walks in God’s will and in His fellowship (1 Jn. 1: 4).

To be and stay “undefiled” is to “keep (ourselves) unspotted by the world” (James 1; 27). The world promises happiness, but it has yet to be delivered.

Happiness comes through submission to God and obedience to His Word because it is through our submission to God and obedience to His Word that we have victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. Victory does not come through being like the world for that spells defeat, but through our separation from the world and being holy.

So, there is only one path, one way to true happiness, and that is through true holiness, and that is through obedience to God’s Word. The way will not be easy, for as Christian in Pilgrims Progress discovered, there are many things along the way that promise happiness and pleasure but are designed to get us out of the will of God and out of the path of holiness that leads to our happiness.

Only holiness of heart can produce real and lasting happiness. We need not look for happiness anywhere else.
