Ware Gets Late Score to Hold Off Bearcat Upset

The Bainbridge Bearcats fell 22-16 on Friday in a hard fought defeat at Ware County. The lose puts the Bearcats at a 2-4 overall as they head into a bye week before region play begins on October 7th.

In Friday’s matchup the 9th ranked Bearcats took on undefeated and 2nd ranked Ware County.

The Bearcats opened up the game as Bo Smith led the Bearcats on a 19 play 85 yard scoring drive which ended when Keenan Phillips crashed into the endzone from 2-yards out. The extra point was good and the Bearcats led 7-0.

The Bearcat defense forced a three and out and the offense went back to work. Nick Tyre tacked on to the Bearcats lead in the second quarter with a 21-yard field goal, pushing the Bearcats lead to 10.

On Ware County’s next possession, linebacker Dontavious Broadnax picked off a pass and returned it 42-yards for a Bearcat touchdown.

However, just before the end of the first half, Nickao Smith connected with wide receiver Jarvis Hayes for a 17-yard score as Smith ran in the two-point conversion, making it a 16-8 game going into halftime. After the half Ware would put up two more scores. The last coming with only minutes remaining in the game. The final score gave Ware a 22-16 lead.

The Bearcats will have next Friday off. The team plans to focus on fundamentals and getting better during the bye week.

The Bearcats open region play at home on Friday, October 7 as they take on Westover at Centennial Field.
