Sight and Insight

James H. Cagle

When Jesus asked blind Bartimaeus, “What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?” Bartnaeus said, “That I might receive my sight” (Mk. 10: 46-52). When God told King Solomon “Ask what I shall give thee” Solomon said, “Give me now wisdom and knowledge” (2 Chron. 1: 7-10).

Blind Bartimaeus asked for natural sight. And he had the power of his eyes restored and could see the world he lived in. He could again see the physical and obvious. King Solomon asked for wisdom, or insight, or spiritual discernment, the power to see beyond the obvious.

We are born with sight and if we use our sight to get an education we can gain some insight, some deeper and fuller understanding in some field of study. Scientists have insight in their particular field of study. The common man only sees the obvious while the scientist looks beyond the obvious at what creates the obvious. What puzzles and perplexes the unlearned man is simple and easily understood by the scientist.

There is also spiritual insight. As a scientist understands the significance of the facts in his particular field of study so a person with spiritual insight understands the significance of God’s Word. To a person with spiritual insight the Word is a living book that gives them discernment and understanding of the things that puzzle and perplex most people. Those with sight only see world-changing events and consider them insignificant, but those with insight see the significance of those events and see God’s eternal plan being fulfilled.

Spiritual insight is a must for the servant of God or they will spend their time laboring in the obvious and accomplishing nothing for God. Jesus gave His disciples insight (Luke. 24: 32, 45). He opened up their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures. He gave them insight so they could understand the meaning and significance of Scripture and explain it to others.

A formal Christian education is a start to understanding the Bible, but insight comes through a diligent personal study of the Word and the help of the Holy Spirit. And insight into the deep things of God comes only to those who are obedient to the Word of God.

The reason the church has become stagnated is her ministers are stuck laboring in the obvious. Most everyone sitting in the pew can finish every sentence the minister begins. To revive the church her ministers must pay whatever it cost to get beyond the obvious and get some fresh insight into the deep things of God, for God’s Word is unfathomable.

  1. Amen Amen
Hallelujah Fresh insight into the deep things of God. I’m finding this only happens for me as I sit for extended times in His presence daily, reading studying worshiping praying talking with my Father and listening to Him. ( He often changes up the order of the above)
I ask Him to read the Word with me and to me. He highlights the deeper things.
Before I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2013 my Father put these words for months before me: Deep calls unto Deep. He is such a tender and magnificent Father Love.
Here I am in remission 8 + years later, even after I was pretty much given a death sentence by docs and satan. I told my Father, take me home with You… Yayyyy or keep me here and I will love for You and continue to proclaim Your goodness!
