Back The Badge Big Bend Pays Tribute to Captain Justin Bedwell and Family

One of our true heroes was called home on March 1st of this year. Captain Justin Bedwell’s life tragically ended during his unwavering service to our community. True leaders lead by example, and Captain Bedwell was the epitome of a leader. Not only did he provide leadership and protection for his family, but also, to Bainbridge and Decatur County.

Back The Badge Big Bend is a grassroots organization comprised of everyday citizens, not necessarily associated with law enforcement. With all the negative press shown towards law enforcement in the past, this organization has made it a top priority to show tribute and respect to the men and women who protect us each and every day.

“The Back the Badge message is simple. We want to let the brave men and women who lay it on the line to keep us safe, know that they are appreciated. A small token of love in a time when law enforcement in this country is being vilified and disrespected!”

Back The Badge Big Bend has been placing billboards throughout the area to show support for law enforcement officers. They want officers to know that their sacrifice is noticed, and also, thank them for answering the call to truly “protect and serve.”

Until recently, Back The Badge Big Bend did not place billboards honoring fallen officers. Captain Justin Bedwell was one of the first heroes through this organization to be honored and remembered for giving it all to his community. Vic Vickers of Back The Badge, after viewing Captain Bedwell’s service online, sought out leaders of our community to ask if they would be interested in honoring our fallen hero by placing a reminder of his service on the digital billboard just off the bypass.

Captain Bedwell’s wife, Katherine Bedwell, his daughter, Maddie Lue Chapman, and mother, Georgia Bedwell attended the ceremony honoring their hero on March 30, 2021. Members of the community and officers from Decatur County Sheriff’s office were there to show their love and support to Captain Bedwell’s family.

Our hero is no longer with us, but we will never forget his sacrifice in preserving and protecting our community from the evil that is so prevalent in this world.

Katherine, Maddie Lue, and Georgia, we love you and we will never forget the price Justin paid for each and every one of us.
