Freddy Edward Alford was born May 15, 1939, in Climax, GA, the son of Louie & Kate Day Alford. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1957, and earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and specialist’s degree from Troy State. Freddy married Deana Dorough in 1964, and together they touched thousands of lives through the lens of education. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Freddy began his career teaching and coaching in Danielsville, GA. He made his rounds through Gainesville, Cordele, Bainbridge High School, and Hutto before tackling the superintendency in Chattahoochee County. Freddy knew his calling was education, so he spent a few years supporting educators through RESA in Americus. His influence left “heart marks” on those he encountered and will forever be remembered at the Freddy Alford Softball Field in Chattahoochee County.
For the past thirty years, Freddy has enjoyed every single day of retirement. His love for sports never waned, and he was all in to hunt, fish, or hit a few golf balls. Freddy treasured his time on Lake Seminole especially with friends from the Hickory Hill Community.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Deana D. Alford; his children, Kelly Alford Wynn (Charles) of Columbus and Freddy E. Alford, Jr. of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Katie & Taylor, Tripp, Emily, and Abby; his siblings, Tom Alford (Phyllis) and Larry Nichols; as well as a large extended family. In addition to his parents, Freddy was preceded in death by his siblings, Bob Alford, Ellen Jennings, and Jimmie Ruth Gurley.
