Quarteto Nuevo blends Western classical music, Eastern European folk, Latin music and jazz into a sound that crosses musical traditions. Guitar, cello, saxophone and percussion give the four musicians a wide range of sounds, from delicate passages to driving rhythms. The result is a performance that moves between styles while giving each musician room to shine.
The ensemble’s range offers listeners both familiar sounds and something unexpected.
The L.A. Jazz Scene newspaper writes: “The most unique aspect of the group, is their ensemble sound … Quarteto Nuevo’s music is modern and uses advanced rhythms and time signatures yet also has the sound of ancient times. Their nine performances on their CD are atmospheric, full of subtle surprises and unlike anything else heard in the jazz world.”
Quarteto Nuevo won the Beverly Hills National Auditions and received South Arts’ Jazz Roads Touring and Jazz Roads Creative Residency grants. Its musicians use their different instruments and influences to create performances designed to connect with audiences of all ages.
The concert is part of the ABAC Presents! performing arts series, which brings professional artists to ABAC and the surrounding community. The series also supports students’ study of the arts by giving them opportunities to experience live performances.
ABAC Presents! will return Nov. 19 to Howard Auditorium with American Tune: Simon, Croce & Taylor – The ’70s Singer-Songwriter Tribute featuring award-winning singer-songwriter Tom Glynn. For more information about ABAC’s Arts & Culture series, visit arts.abac.edu.
