Bearcats Get Road Win Over Shaw

By Brian McCorkle

The Bainbridge Bearcats took their show on the road Friday night and came home with an impressive 42-13 road victory over Shaw High School in Columbus. The win improves the Bearcats to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in region 1-AAAA.

Bainbridge came into the game looking for their first road win of the season against a quality region opponent that was undefeated at home and averaging 39 points a game during that stretch.

Wanting to get off to a fast start, the Bearcat offense picked up where it left off last week. The Bearcats opened the scoring with a two-play drive as Keenan Phillips bolted in from 45-yards to put Bainbridge up 7-0.

After Shaw got a 51-yard touchdown of their own, Bainbridge blocked the extra point to maintain the lead, 7-6. This is as close as the Raiders would get the rest of the night.

The offense went back to work and Smith hit Antavious Murphy for a 43-touchdown. The pass capped off an eight-play drive to start the second quarter.

After a defensive stop, Smith found Murphy again. This time on a 10-yard pass that put Bainbridge up 21-6.

Coming out after half time Trevious Freeman added two 3rd quarter rushing touchdowns of his own and Keenan Phillips put the game away for good with his second touchdown of the day.

The Raiders would add a late score with only second remaining, but it was too little to late as the Bearcats eased to a 42-13 victory.

As the Bearcats enter their second bye week of the season, they prepare for Hardaway at home on Friday, Oct. 28 as the BHS Athletic Department will host a 40-year reunion for the 1982 State Champions.
