Decatur County Prison, in partnership with the Adult Education program at Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC), recently earned the Georgia Department of Corrections Education’s award for the most GED® completions by a county prison throughout the entire State of Georgia. To date, individuals at the prison have earned a total of thirteen GEDs this year.

Warden Gordon Screen credits SRTC’s Adult Education instructor David “Emory” Smith for much of this success. “This is a great achievement for staff, inmates, and Southern Regional Technical College,” said Warden Screen. “Most of all, I would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. David Smith of Southern Regional Technical College. Mr. Smith is our primary instructor who prepares the inmates for testing. Mr. Smith has always been the driving force in our GED program success. We would also like to thank Dr. Lance Brantley with the Georgia Department of Corrections, the County Administrator, and the Board of Commissioners for their support of our GED program.”

SRTC’s Director for Adult Education Andy Semones added that Smith currently has SRTC’s highest GED completion rate, with a total of 21 students earning their GEDs this year! “I am so proud that the Decatur County Correctional Institute has been honored with this award,” said Semones. “This is the direct result of an amazing professional collaboration between SRTC and DCCI. It is nice to see the support and training of both institutions having a positive impact on the lives of the individuals in this program.”
