Choosing our Eternal Condition of Existence

James H. Cagle

“One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever” (Ecclesiastes 1: 4 KJV).

No one gets to choose the condition of existence they’ll be born into in this world, but everyone gets to choose the condition of existence they will live in throughout eternity.

We were not offered the opportunity to choose our family, race, gender, state and country, or our gifts or talents when we were born. We were not given the choice as to whether we wanted to be born in a poor family, or a rich family. We had no choice in these matters that have identified us from birth. God decided all those things in eternity past.

Much like the revolving door in a store where some are leaving, and others are entering, people are leaving this world at death as others are entering at birth.

The conditions a person can be born into and exist in this world are many. If the unborn were allowed to choose the conditions they wanted to be born into would they even want to be born? Or after seeing all the horrors and atrocities of humanity would they from behind the veil make the decision not to be born? Solomon said that the unborn is better than both the dead and the living because he has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun (Ecc. 4: 1-3).

We were all born sinners that came kicking and screaming into a sin-cursed world that has already been host to many generations of sinners and will host many more possibly.

Though none of us chose the condition of our temporal existence on planet earth, we do get to choose the condition of our eternal existence. But this choice must be made before we die.

Though as sinners we were destined for Hell, we can receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and make Heaven our final destination. For our after-life or all eternity, we can choose God as our Father, Christ as our elder Brother, the Redeemed as our family, and the New Jerusalem as our home. The Gospel is presented to help us make this choice today. Choose wisely, for God will honor your choice.
