Keep the holiday season happy by making good health and safety priorities, says Southwest Health District Health Director Dr. Charles Ruis. “The following recommendations are easy yet can make a big difference when it comes to the wellbeing of you and your loved ones,” he said.
· Check prescription medications prior to the holiday break to see if refills will be needed; it may be difficult getting them refilled once the holidays begin
· Wash hands often, using warm water and soap.
· Get vaccinated against seasonal flu.
· Don’t drink and drive, or let others drink and drive.
· Use seat belts while driving or riding in motor vehicles.
· Prepare food safely (avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures and refrigerate promptly).
· Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke.
· Practice fire safety; don’t leave fireplaces, candles, space heaters or food cooking on stoves unattended.
· Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings and vehicles; wear appropriate eye protection; never give fireworks to children; keep plenty of water handy.
· Monitor children, keeping potentially dangerous toys, food, drinks and household items out of reach.
“It is also important to wear appropriate cold-weather clothing when the temperature drops,” Ruis said.
Other tips to consider include managing holiday stress by balancing work, home and play and getting proper sleep; eating healthy and exercising during the holiday season; and staying home if sick to avoid spreading germs.
