James Roy Collins was born March 15, 1946, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Roy & Evie Harrell Collins. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and served six years in the National Guard. Jimmy worked for a while at International Paper Company and retired with 40+ years of service from Englehard (BASF). He was an active member of First Baptist Church and Baracca Sunday School Class.
Jimmy had a tough exterior, but beneath it was a kind heart and a quiet sense of humor that caught you by surprise. A hidden comedian at times, Jimmy had a way of slipping in a witty remark when you least expected it. He treasured the friendships he made with his co-workers and was always willing to help however he could. He took pride in keeping his yard just right and didn’t mind sharing his thoughts on the subject.
Jimmy’s faith quietly guided the way he lived. He spent countless hours reading his Bible and Christian books and offering to transport others to their appointments without a second thought. He enjoyed good food, sweet fellowship, and was always happy to help Miss Phyllis in the kitchen. Jimmy liked staying on the go, fishing, riding his bicycle, going for a run, and staying in tip-top shape. If a stray cat happened by, chances are it found a meal, a little kindness, and a place to call home.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Sapp Collins; his children, April & Tommy McNair and Elayne & Zack Williams; his grandchildren, Ashley & Ryan, Brandi & Imari, Zack, II & Courtney, and Rebecca & Austin; and his great-grandchildren, Jacob, Madison, Raegan, Zachery, Finley, and Lucas. In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his siblings, Laverne Collins, Linton Collins, and Jerry Collins.
Bryant Funeral Home, located at 105 N. Florida Street, is assisting the family with arrangements. (229-246-3321)
