Suya Slice beef products recalled due to production without inspection

Suya Slice, LLC, a Memphis, Tenn. establishment, is recalling approximately 445 pounds of ready-to-eat beef products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The ready-to-eat beef jerky and marinated skewered beef products were produced between Oct. 16, 2021, and May 20, 2023. The following products are subject to recall [view labels]:
    • 1.5-oz. plastic resealable bag packages of beef jerky containing “Suya Slice Kilishi Beef Jerky” on the label.
    • 5-oz. plastic resealable bag packages of marinated skewered beef containing “Suya Slice Suya” on the label.
The products subject to recall do not bear the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped directly to customers via online sales and to retail locations nationwide. The problem was discovered when FSIS followed up on a referral from the Illinois Department of Agriculture and observed beef products that did not have the USDA mark of inspection at a retail location. Upon further investigation, FSIS determined that the products were not produced in an FSIS-inspected establishment. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider. FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ pantries, refrigerators, or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Restaurants and food retailers that have received shipments of oysters harvested from NS 10, an oyster harvest area in Nova Scotia, Canada on June 9, 2023, and were distributed by Bill and Stanley Oyster Co. of Nova Scotia, Canada through U.S. distributors to 17 states and the District of Columbia: CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IN, MA, MD, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TX, and WI. The FDA is working to obtain additional information on distribution of the oysters and will continue to monitor the investigation, provide assistance to state authorities, and update our communications to the public as needed. Consumers, especially those who are or could become pregnant, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems, who have recently consumed raw oysters and suspect they have food poisoning should seek medical care immediately.

Purpose

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to eat, and restaurants and food retailers not to sell, and to dispose of raw oysters that were harvested from harvest location NS 10 in Nova Scotia, Canada on June 9, 2023 and were distributed to 17 states and the District of Columbia: CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IN, MA, MD, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TX, and WI. Consumers who purchased oysters after June 9, 2023 should check the packaging to see if they were harvested from location NS 10 on June 9, 2023. Contaminated shellfish can cause illness if eaten raw, particularly in people with compromised immune systems. Food contaminated with norovirus may look, smell, and taste normal. Consumers of these products who are experiencing symptoms of norovirus illness should contact their healthcare provider, who should report their symptoms to their local Health Department.

Summary of Problem and Scope

On June 30, 2023, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) reported to CDC an outbreak consisting of 9 cases of norovirus illness associated with the consumption of oysters from Nova Scotia. The oysters harvested from Nova Scotia were sold in both Canada and the U.S. FDA is working with federal, state, and local officials, and with Canadian public health authorities to investigate this outbreak, obtain additional information on distribution of the oysters, and determine if additional illnesses have occurred. Retailers should not sell or serve raw oysters from harvest location NS 10 with a harvest date of June 9, 2023, which will be printed on product tags. Shellfish can cause illness if contaminated and eaten raw, particularly in people with compromised immune systems. Food contaminated with norovirus may look, smell, and taste normal.

FDA Actions

The FDA is issuing this alert advising consumers not to eat, and restaurants and food retailers not to sell or serve, raw oysters from harvest location NS 10 on June 9, 2023 that were distributed to 17 states and the District of Columbia: CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IN, MA, MD, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TX, and WI. The FDA will continue to monitor the investigation and provide updates and assistance to state authorities as needed.

Symptoms of Norovirus

People of all ages can get infected and sick with norovirus. The most common symptoms of norovirus are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. Other symptoms include fever, headache, and body ache. A person usually develops symptoms 12 to 48 hours after being exposed to norovirus. Most people with norovirus illness get better within 1 to 3 days. If you have norovirus illness, you can feel extremely ill, and vomit or have diarrhea many times a day. This can lead to dehydration, especially in young children, older adults, and people with other illnesses. Symptoms of dehydration include decrease in urination, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up. Children who are dehydrated may cry with few or no tears and be unusually sleepy or fussy. If you think you or someone you are caring for is severely dehydrated, call your healthcare provider.

Recommendations for Restaurants and Retailers

Restaurants and retailers should not sell or serve the potentially contaminated oysters. Restaurants and retailers should dispose of any products by throwing them in the garbage or returning them to their distributor for destruction. Restaurants and retailers should also be aware that shellfish may be a source of pathogens and should control the potential for cross-contamination of food processing equipment and the food processing environment. They should follow the steps below:
    • Wash hands with warm water and soap following the cleaning and sanitation process.
    • Retailers, restaurants, and other food service operators who have processed and packaged any potentially contaminated products need to be concerned about cross-contamination of cutting surfaces and utensils through contact with the potentially contaminated products.
    • Retailers that have sold bulk product should clean and sanitize the containers used to hold the product.
    • Regular frequent cleaning and sanitizing of food contact surfaces and utensils used in food preparation may help to minimize the likelihood of cross-contamination.

CAVA Spicy Hummus recalled to undeclared sesame

Cava Foods, Inc., a subsidiary of Cava Group, Inc. in Washington D.C., is issuing a voluntary recall of one lot of its packaged CAVA Spicy Hummus due to the potential for the product to contain undeclared sesame, which is a food allergen. People who are allergic to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.

The single affected product lot was distributed to retailers including Whole Foods Market, Giant Foods, MOM’s Organic Market, and regional independent retailers. CAVA’s packaged Spicy Hummus is sold nationwide. CAVA voluntarily initiated the recall after a single retail store notified the company that packaging lids for CAVA Spicy Labneh (which do not declare sesame as an ingredient) were applied to containers of Spicy Hummus, which contains sesame, a common allergen. The wrong lid was applied to a limited number of Spicy Hummus containers by a third-party supplier. The affected product is packaged in 8-ounce plastic tubs, labeled on the side with UPC 89832800227, Lot# MD023804, and a Best By Date of August 19, 2023. To date, CAVA has not received any customer complaints or reports of illness because of the mislabeling. Consumers who purchased 8-ounce tubs of CAVA’s Spicy Hummus Lot# MD023804 with a Best By Date of August 19, 2023, on or after June 16 are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. ONO Vegan Blueberry Muffin Protein Overnight Oats recalled due to undeclared milk

ONO LLC of San Diego, CA, issuing a voluntary recall of its 2.75 ounce packages of ONO Vegan Blueberry Muffin Protein Overnight Oats, with lot number 11923, because it may contain undeclared milk. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this affected product lot. The recalled packages of ONO Vegan Blueberry Muffin Protein Overnight Oats with lot number 11923 were distributed nationwide in retail stores including Target and Vitamin Shoppe locations and through mail orders from www.eatovernightoats.comExternal Link Disclaimer. No other ONO flavor with this lot number or expiration date was impacted. The product comes in a 2.75 ounce, blue plastic package marked with lot #11923 on the back and with an expiration date of 04/29/24 stamped on the side. The recall was initiated immediately after it was discovered that the milk-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by an accidental ingredient mix up by our copacking facility. Tim Heung Yuen black melon seed recalled due to undeclared wheat and soy

Richin Trading Inc. of Alhambra, CA is recalling its 6 ounce and 12 ounce packages of Tim Heung Yuen brand black melon seed because they may contain undeclared soy and wheat. People who have allergies to soy and wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide in retail stores. The recalled products were packed in plastic bags and can be identified by UPC 715685190013 and UPC 715685190020. No illnesses have been reported to date. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the soy and wheat containing product was distributed in packaging that did not state the presence of soy and wheat. Consumers who have purchased recalled products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Public health alert issued for Never Any! ham and cheese lunch kit due to undeclared peanuts

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for Never Any! brand ready-to-eat (RTE) ham and cheese lunch kits containing chocolate chip cookies that may contain peanut, a known allergen, which is not declared on the finished product label. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with an allergy to peanut are aware that this product should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the products are believed to no longer be available for purchase. The ham and cheese lunch kits with the chocolate chip cookies were produced between June 27, 2023, and July 5, 2023. The following products are subject to the public health alert [view labels]:
    • 2.9-oz. plastic tray packages containing “NEVER ANY! UNCURED HAM & CHEESE LUNCH KIT” with a Use By date of “SEPT 18 2023”.
