Steven Michael Powell was born December 5, 1952, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Harvey and Christine Haire Powell. He attended schools in Bainbridge and married Joyce Cantley in 1973. They owned Powell’s Garage for over 35 years. Steve was a Christian by faith.

Steve was that guy who could fix anything but never bragged, a mechanic extraordinaire. He had a kind and humble spirit mixed with a dry sense of humor that made him easily approachable. Steve loved children: his children (especially the grands), your children, and children that wound up at the ballfields where he spent many years cheering and handing out snacks. He played the guitar, could cut a rug, and was ever present in some form or fashion for Braves baseball games. The simple things in life made him happiest. Those that knew him well knew he gave when he didn’t have himself and loved those deemed unlovable by the world.

Survivors include his children, Ricky Roberts and Chris Roberts; his grandchildren, Amber, Anna, and Josh; his great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Grayson, Caleigh, Lexi, Kyle, John Michael, and Hope; his siblings, James Wesley Powell, Josie Ann Powell, Tricia Bryars, Ricky Powell, Billy Powell, Mickey Powell, Tim Powell, and Gwen Powell; and a host of extended family. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Joyce Cantley Powell; his brother, Kent Powell; and his grandson, “Johnboy” Roberts.

Bryant Funeral Home, located at 105 N. Florida Street, is assisting the family with arrangements. (229-246-3321)

  1. What a great man ! Taught me more about life and how to be a humble gentleman than anyone . Like most people, Steve gave me the nick name “skeeter cake” , always followed by , “somebody told me you got married last night “ . Lots of time spent with Mrs. Joyce and Steve, Rest easy, and give Mrs. Joyce a hug for me .
