Phyllis Lane Lucas

July 10, 1940 – November 12, 2021

Phyllis Lucas, beloved mother and friend, passed away suddenly on November 12, 2021. Phyllis was born July 10, 1940 in Carrolton, Georgia to Urie and Willie Lane. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Basil Lucas. She is survived by her children, Todd and Ann Lucas of Birmingham, Alabama, Louisa and Lane Russell of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and Lane and Stacie Lucas of Tallahassee, Florida; her sister, Frances Long, of Dadeville, Alabama; her grandchildren, Lauren, Madison, Meghan, and Ava; and many friends, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Phyllis attended Mercer University where she met Basil. Phyllis and Basil moved to Bainbridge in 1972 and she was an educator in Decatur County, serving as teacher, administrator, and principal in the school system. Phyllis was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, enjoyed teaching Sunday School, and loved being a member of the church choir. Phyllis was an active supporter of the arts in Bainbridge, volunteering for many years with the Arts Council and the Firehouse Art Center. She was a talented artist and loved spending time painting, especially painting portraits of her friends, family, and her beloved granddaughters.

Phyllis was an energetic participant in all of her endeavors. She was dedicated to improving the lives of others through teaching, volunteering, and mentoring. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and was an excellent role model for her four loving granddaughters. Her spirit and involvement in her family and friend’s lives will be missed.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Phyllis Lucas on Saturday, November 20th at 2:30 at Ivey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Memorial Contributions be made to the Firehouse Arts Center, P.O. Box 35, Bainbridge, Georgia 39818.
