Mary Joyce Cantley was born July 15, 1950 in Bainbridge, GA, the daughter of Arthur & Vera Kelley Cantley. She attended schools in Bainbridge. In 1973, Joyce married Steve Powell, the perfect partner for a lifetime of adventure. They owned Powell’s Garage for over 35 years. The story goes that Joyce could diagnose car problems as well as Steve and usually just by hearing a description of the problem.

Joyce was about as plain spoken as they come. If she thought it, she said it, and if she loved you, you knew it. She was always a daddy’s girl and she let it be known to her siblings. Coming from a large family meant that everywhere she went she had some kind of connection or kinship to folks. Joyce spent years at the ballfields with her children and grandchildren resulting in friendships that have impacted generations of people. In the quiet moments, which were rare, she enjoyed watching and feeding her hummingbirds.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Steve Powell; her sons, Ricky Roberts and Chris Roberts; her grandchildren, Josh & Nikki, Amber, Zach, and Anna; her great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Grayson aka “her little sunshine”, Caleigh, Lexi, John Michael, Hope, and Kyle; her siblings, Maxine Glenn of Tallahassee, Gladys & David Ellis, Arlene Rentz, Larry & Cathy Cantley, all of Bainbridge, Archie & Vicky Cantley of Calvary, and Jean Josey & Paul O’Neal also of Tallahassee. In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Cantley Jones, and her grandson, John “Johnboy” Roberts.
