Florence Mary Elizabeth Boyett was born March 3, 1927 in Climax, GA, the daughter of James Clarence Boyett and Mettie Lou Moore Boyett. She married the love of her life, William James Gillespie, in 1949 and they made their home in Attapulgus where they were active members of Attapulgus Baptist Church.

“Granny” always had a smile on her face and bag packed. Her favorite destinations were the beach and the mountains, but it didn’t really matter where or who was going. She has been known to say, “I can’t go right now but don’t leave me.” For years the three sisters kept the roads hot even if it was just for a little shopping or to eat out. Florence enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning the fruits of her labor (which she did up until 6 months ago), playing cards, and fishing. Florence was the talk of the town with her Amarillo lilies. Granny’s children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She spent many days at the baseball fields cheering on her grandsons and couldn’t wait to share the play by play with “Miss” Claudine Jones and “Miss” Virginia Kitchengs. Florence treated her church family like blood-kin making sure they had dumplings for every church event.

Survivors include her children, Glenda & Ron Kinsey, Thelma & Charles Harrell, and Patrick Gillespie; her grandchildren, Chas & Cheryl Harrell, Bobby & Jennifer Harrell, Mitch Stacey, Gina & J.W. Jones, Jennifer & Ezra Lusk, and Kristen & Gaylen Hardeman; her great-grandchildren, Carson Harrell, Dalton Harrell, Colton Harrell, Maddox Miller, John Willis Jones, Hayden Lusk, Hudson Lusk, Ella & Evie Hardeman, and Jade & Eden Stacey. In addition to her parents, Florence was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Gillespie; her son, James Marvin Gillespie; and her siblings, Juanita Humphrey, Allee Duncan, Franklin Boyett, and Pete Dezerne.

  2. Thelma, I just read of your mother’s passing and I am so very sorry for you, Glenda and Patrick! You all were so very good to her as we all are with our aging parents; past and present. She was a loving and caring mother to all of your friends as we were growing up and she will never be forgotten!

Prayers to all of you as you make your life changes without her and know that she is now with so many loved ones!

Take care of yourself and know that you were lucky enough to have your mom in you life for a very long time!

    Sincerely, Joy Duke Barrett
