Betty Jane Rentz, 84, of Lake Seminole, GA, passed away Monday, June 29, 2020.

Betty Jane Phillips was born February 11, 1936 in Newton, GA, the daughter of Grady and Lizzie Pearl Musgrove Phillips. She married Talmadge Adam “Sonny” Rentz in 1953 and they made their home in southwest Georgia. She earned a master’s degree in nursing and served as a professor of nursing at Bainbridge College. Betty was a member at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

“Miss” Betty lived “the lighter side of life”. She enjoyed being outdoors and fishing. (Don’t mess with HER fish on the bed around the dock.) Facebook and video games occupied her “non-outdoor” time. She loved to cook, especially those new recipes she ran across on social media and desserts. Family meant the world to “Miss” Betty. For a person who knew almost everyone and treated them like family, this meant quite a lot of love. She was the person who loved BIG and forever. With “Miss” Betty there were no secrets unless, of course, you told her she couldn’t tell a soul.

Survivors include her children, Rhonda & Donnie Murphy of Bainbridge, GA, Phillip & Anna Rentz of Leesburg, GA, Lisa & Wayne Merritt of Canton, NC, and Tommy Edmonds of Donalsonville, GA; her siblings, Lawrence Phillips of Jonesboro, GA and Rebecca Chason of Climax, GA; her grandchildren, Lee & Stephanie, Adam & Amanda, Lucas, Ryan & Taylor, Briana & Matt, and Erik & Alexis; and great-grandchildren, Austin, Topanga, Adda Lynn, Zoey, Riggs, Jasemine, Caleb, Jaxon, Watson, Erika, Ridge, Griffin, Merritt, and Layla. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Talmadge “Sonny” Rentz; her sister, Nora Hunsberger; and her granddaughter, Courtney Singletary.

  1. I’ll miss you Miss Betty! You were an inspiration to all of us to “lighten up” and enjoy life.

  2. My heart is broken and crying. Betty was the first person I called when my firstborn was trying to make his entrance into this world. I love her like a sister. Just knowing she is not physically in Bainbridge leaves a void. Thoughts and prayers for comfort to Rhonda, Lisa, and Phillip and all the family. Take care of each other!

  3. I have fond memories of Betty. She was one in a million! Loved her and Sonny! RIP!! Hugs and prayers for the family!
