Of the many opportunities in Georgia 4-H to develop leadership, one of the most positive experiences is the opportunity for older 4-H’ers to mentor younger 4-H’ers by serving as teen leaders in their county program and also at district and state events. Teen leaders have specific responsibilities and leadership roles and a good teen leader can have an incredible influence on others.
On June 3-4, 2020, UGA Extension staff from Decatur, Seminole and Mitchell counties, hosted a virtual 4-H Certified Teen Leader Training. The five hour training spanned two days and included learning modules related to leadership qualities, handling conflict, communication personality, characteristics of children and youth engagement. The sessions were taught by Mitchell County 4-H Extension Educator Debra Cox, Seminole County 4-H Agent Cindy Meadows, Decatur County 4-H AmeriCorps member Lacey West, Seminole County 4-H Vista member Kameron Landeen and Teresa Adkins, Decatur County 4-H/FACS Agent.
Twenty-five 7th-12th grade 4-H’ers participated in the online training and completed the requirements to become a 4-H Certified Teen Leader. Decatur County 4-H participants were Sutton Smith, Omarion Smart, Samantha Turnage, Kinsey Ward, Sybil Lee and Samantha Floyd.
