Lottie Blair Gabel

Lottie Blair Gabel, age 85, died at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital on the morning of Tuesday, May 7.  A service will be held at Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 18.  Visitation will be at 3 PM in the parlor followed by a memorial service at 4 PM.

She was born August 17, 1933 in Donaldsonville, GA to Cuthbert Appleton Blair and Elthia Hornsby Blair.  Ms. Gabel graduated from Seminole County High School and then from Logan Chiropractic College where she met her future husband, Robert Arthur “Bob” Gabel.  She also graduated from Shurtliff College with a BS in Biology and from FSU with a teaching degree.

After helping to start a Chiropractic Office in Albany, Ms. Gabel started her teaching career at Albany High School and later transferred to Dougherty High School to be with her children.  She enjoyed teaching biology and positively affecting the lives of many students.  She was a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church where she especially enjoyed Sunday School and Circle.

She loved providing her children with opportunities to play sports and musical instruments.  She also loved to watch her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren play sports and was there to support them.  She enjoyed being with family for all occasions.  Her hobbies included gardening, swimming, crafting, reading, sewing, family game time, and cooking.  Traveling was on her bucket list and she accomplished that goal by traveling throughout our country and many other countries.  Later in her life, she loved getting together with friends to play bridge.  Most importantly, she was a wonderful mother to all of her children throughout her life.

She is survived by her 6 children:  Lorrie Monahan and her husband Thomas “Tom” Monahan of Albany, GA; Susan Daniels and her husband Harold Daniels of Gainsville, GA; Virginia “Ginny” Huggins of Leesburg, GA; Arthur Gabel and his husband Mark Di Phillipo of Springfield, VA; Robert Gabel of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Sharon Hilton and her husband Jeff Hilton of Sharpsburg, GA.  She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren:  Thomas Monahan (Kim), Michael Monahan, Elizabeth Rushing (Maurice), Clayton Hester (Allison), Taylor Daniels (Nikki), Julie Daniels, Matthew Huggins (Tara), Jennifer Holbrook (Chase), Ashley Huggins, and Claire Hilton.  She is also survived by her 6 great grandchildren:  Debbie, Will, Henley, Banks, Holland, and Harriet.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church or to the American Heart Association.
