Floyd Eugene Atkinson was born November 18, 1943 in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Floyd and Ellene Willis Atkinson. Gene was a graduate of Bainbridge High School. He married Charlotte Lovering in 1977 and they made their home in Bainbridge where Gene worked as a terminal operator for Liquid Transfer. He was Baptist by faith.
Gene was known as a family man doting over his grandchildren and enjoying every opportunity to gather, especially if it involved a fish fry. He kept the phone lines hot. Those on the receiving end will miss those regular calls, his laughter and his sense of humor. Gene was orderly in his mannerisms even in his garden. (His pepper plants were exactly spaced for optimal growth.) He enjoyed fishing, country music and guns. If there was a gun magazine nearby, he took the time to check it out. Gene Atkinson loved Bainbridge and spent his lifetime making memories in his hometown.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Charlotte L. Atkinson; his children, Tina Sims and her husband, Frank, of Destin, FL, Shane Atkinson and his wife, Jessica, of Ft. Walton, FL, Jessica Atkinson Hart and her husband, Jason, of Bainbridge, GA and Jeremy Atkinson and his wife, Jenna, also of Bainbridge; his siblings, Carol & Lenard Hirsch of St. George, FL, Kay Callahan of Tallahassee, FL, Leon “Tubby” & Sandy Atkinson of Bainbridge, Rhonda Scott of Chesapeake, VA and Lloyd & Amy Atkinson of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Dylan, Danielle, Lindsey, Reece and Carter; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Atkinson.
