Janet Leigh Ohlinger was born November 4, 1953, in Port St. Joe, FL, the daughter of James & Jeanne Phillips Ohlinger. She was a graduate of Westover High School in Albany, GA and earned masters’ degrees in Voice and Child Psychology from Hardin-Simmons University. Jan met the love of her life, Isaiah, at school where they shared a love of music. She was a member of First Baptist Church and served on the Baptist Missions Board.
Jan lived a Christ-centered life and set an example of unconditional love for those she encountered. She and Isaiah were church planters. They felt their calling was to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others. Their efforts were acknowledged with the All Star Home Missions in 2001. In 2011, this Southwest Georgia native made the trek from Las Vegas back home. She “worked” at Killearn Lakes Elementary in Tallahassee as a guidance counselor. Knowing her love for children and the call on her life, she probably never considered it “work”. Music soothed her soul and “Mama Jan” shared this love, and her heart, with those she considered her adopted grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Kathryn Mejia Collins (Richard) of Bainbridge, and Jon Ohlinger Mejia (Katie) of Kyle, TX; her grandchildren, Ezra, Everette, and Ephraim; her mother & step-father, Jeanne Ohlinger & R.C. White; her sisters, Flo Braswell (Julian) of Bainbridge and Genia Johnson (Randy) of Eureka, MT; and a host of extended family. Jan was preceded in death by her father, James E. Ohlinger, and her husband of 33 years, Rev. Isaiah Mejia.
