Thomas Edward Marchant, Sr., 93, of Bainbridge, GA, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

Thomas Edward Marchant was born July 21, 1927 in Leesburg, FL, the son of Warren and Ocie Marchant. The family moved to Bainbridge in 1930 and Mr. Marchant spent his years in the grocery business. (Most remember him best from Piggly Wiggly and later Harvey’s.) He married Margaret Strickland and between the two of them, they built relationships with most of the local folks. Mr. Marchant had a cheerful spirit and was always happy to visit with his regular customers. He never minded doing a little extra and his customers always appreciated him looking out for them. Mr. Marchant was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son, Tommy Marchant and his wife, Gayla; his grandchildren, Chris & Autumn Marchant of Cairo, GA, and Jennifer & Jimmy Beavers of Lexington Park, MD; and his great-grandchildren, Cadence and Spencer. In addition to his parents, Mr. Marchant was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Strickland Marchant.

  1. So sorry to hear of Mr. Marchant’s passing. His wife was a cousin of my dad’s and amazingly, when I was growing up on Broughton Street, one corner of our yards was common to each other. The Marchant’s lived in the 1500 block of Water Street and we lived in the 1500 block of Broughton Street. Their son Tommy and I are the same age and went to school together in elementary school and high school.
