historical committee

Category: General Comments — hwhite @ 7:57 am

I agree that the First Baptist Church should not be able to tear down that house. How soon we forget about that fabulous house torn down accross shotwell street by another church. I appreciate the service churches give to the people of the community but the community is made up of many other valuable assests as well, such as our historic districts. This house should not be moved and should not have been bought if restoration was not the intention. The style of that house is one that lends a unique style to the historic residential district as does each and every home on that portion of Broughton street. I urge everyone to drive down that part of Broughton street and notice each and every home’s differnt style. It is like an architectural historian’s dream. We cannot keep plucking petals off of the town’s flowers or we are going to end up with stems.

Are we doing enough to insure our childrens future?

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 12:32 am

Jester Asks

Are we doing enough to insure our childrens future?

I understand the “no child left behind” method of teaching that U.S. schools have adopted, but is it really working? I participate in a wonderful international exchange student program that allows my family to host a foreign exchange student.

The Real Artsfest?

Category: General Comments — GodsChild @ 1:13 pm

What happen to the real Artsfest?

We used to have a street dance and a big concert? It seems that Artsfest is just for the more wealthy people of Bainbridge now! It would be nice to have an Artsfest the way it used to be!

The street dance on Friday night and the big concert on Saturday night use to be a big hit for Bainbridge. People use to come from all around for these events. I’m not saying that the “new” Artsfest does not draw people from all around, but it just seems that there were more people attending. Does anyone else feel this way?

I just saw where there’s a recycling facility here. I am glad to know about it. I wonder just how many people will take advantage of this. I hope people of this area will put this to good use.

Ross to BOE - Open Dialog Needed

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 2:51 am

William Ross came before the Board of Education on behalf of Ms Cosby to follow-up on concerns she had last meeting and to “keep it on the front burner”.

He stated the cheerleader issue is just a microcosm of a larger picture that needs some discussion.

take notice of your insurance policies

Category: General Comments — miller @ 11:34 am

I’m about to tell you something that you may not know, i didnt. Last friday night my son was pulled over. The officer had run the tag number and it came back no insurance. We have insurance on all of our vehicles, but its under a fleet policy. Dont know if you know it or not, but your tag numbers are not listed on the policies. When they run it, it will say no insurance or unknown insurance. My son showed the insurance card but still got a ticket. I’m not blaming the cop for what he did, he didnt know how it worked. They are suppose to except the fleet card even though the tag number isnt in the computer. We hope the ticket will be taken care of. I have talked to Mr. Landrum and he told me about the insurance situation. What i’m wondering is what if i run up on a road block and they run it and it comes up like that and they lock me up. So if you have a fleet policy you might want to check into it. I’m gonna go to the court house and see if i can get a paper with all my vehicle tag numbers on it and keep it in my vehicle for proof. He said that no tag numbers are listed under fleet policies.

BHS Class of 1973

Category: General Comments — slowhandgroupie @ 11:33 am

Calling all classmates from Class of ‘73. Our reunion will be the summer of 2008, planning meetings will begin this fall.

We have lost a lot of classmates, 3 in the past couple of months. Some thought it would be a good idea if we started trying to track classmates down so we wouldn’t have such a hard time trying to find them later, in time for the reunion.

Get those Purangos out and start flipping the pages. Try to locate as many of your classmates as you can. It will make the planning so much easier, and we will be less likely to leave folks out in contacting them with details later.

Sex Offenders

Category: General Comments — Nina Anne @ 4:09 am

I just wanted to say that I thank you for putting the names of sex offenders on the website.  I also thank the DCSO for updating their website and making sure that all the sex offenders have pictures by their names.  It was so disturbing to hear the name and not be able to see who that person was.

Are our bus drivers doing their jobs?

Category: General Comments — momx2 @ 10:20 pm

Friday afternoon, like so many other afternoons, while I was picking up my two daughters from school, I could not believe the behavior of the children on some of our school busses. Students were hanging out of the windows, throwing drink bottles out of the windows, and moving around the bus. This was not while the
bus was parked, but while it was traveling down the road.
I have witnessed this on several occasions on several different busses. My girls and I were discussing this and they told me that those bus drivers were “good” bus drivers and they liked kids. They also told me that there were some “mean” bus drivers that didn’t like kids and made them stay in their seats the whole bus trip, and would not even let them eat on the bus.
Well, I don’t know about you, but I would rather have a “mean” driver for my girls. I would at least know that they were doing everything possible to see that my girls made it to school and back home safe.
There has been so much press of the qualifications of a bus driver. They have to pass this test and that test. That may be true, but how safe do they drive when they are allowing students to move around the busses, even wrestle in the seats, when the bus is moving.
Can the drivers not see this action? Are they just trying to be “good” bus drivers so that the students will like them? Or are there just no rules on the busses that have to be followed anymore?
When I was in school and road the bus, there were rules to follow if you rode. If you broke these rules, you would be sent to the office for discipline. Does this still apply?
Don’t get me wrong, not all bus drivers allow this behavior. I have been behind busses where all the students were in their seats and well behaved? I guess they must have had on of those ole’ safety first “mean” drivers. Maybe the “mean” driver has different rules to follow from the “good” bus drivers.

Anyone else suffering??

Category: General Comments — mike @ 10:20 pm

I have read that this could be one of the worst allergy seasons on record. It seems as though everyone I’ve talked to has had sinus problems, sore throats, etc. I have already begun dealing with symptoms that normally don’t kick in until late April, early May.
Is anyone else experiencing this?

David Barrett Has Been Arrested

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 2:11 pm

David Barrett has been arrested in Costa Rica!

U.S. Citizen Accused of Child Abuse Arrested in Alajuela

A U.S. citizen accused of child abuse identified as David Johnathan Barrett was arrested yesterday near an Internet café in Alajuela, northwest of San José, according to a statement from International Police (INTERPOL).

Barrett is being investigated for child abuse allegedly committed during 2005-2006 while he served as the leader of a religious group called “The House of Living Waters” in the U.S. state of Georgia. He allegedly used his authority to befriend a 14-year-old girl and have sex with her. Additional charges of child abuse have also been filed against him.

A Georgia judge issued a warrant for Barrett’s arrest in December 2006, after he fled the country, the statement said.

During his stay in Costa Rica, Barrett lived in at least four different Alajuela homes, spending three months in each one, according to the statement. A San José judge is processing his extradition.

Firing of RDC

Category: General Comments — ftrplt @ 1:46 pm

Roslyn Palmer only attended one steering committee meeting and Reynolds none so I think the City had already made up its mind not to participate. I agree that first meeting was an exercise in word smything but the second meeting found Palmer and other key city people missing as it was more important to attend the Firehouse opening.

Many city and county services overlap in their service to the community and it seems there are good reasons for a joint plan while at the same time there are many more details to be considered in a City plan. It is very difficult to prepare any document that requires public input and relies on a large committee for assistance in its preparation. It would be much easier for 3-5 people to put together this plan and I think that is what Roslyn Palmer wants to do. The City has now set back the process started by the RDC in good faith and I just hope those of us who are left can get back on track and develop a good County Plan.

cemetery behind playground

Category: General Comments — miller @ 2:03 pm

Today my husband and I was riding down the road beside the playground on college st. We stopped to take a look at the cemetery behind the playground. It was a pitiful sight.

As well as the city keeps up the playground, you would think they would at least keep the debre off of the graves. There was a big limb on one of the graves and a bush growing between two other ones that about totally covered the graves. It looks as if it hasnt been cleaned in ages.

It was really sad to see such a thing in our community. I see so many city people just riding around doing nothing when there is plenty to be done around our city. Just stop and think, thats someones family laying there.
