YMCA Problems

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 6:28 pm

I received an email requesting that I post this for comments-Larry
——————-

I read about the fighting at our local YMCA, and I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I also heard that there was a bad fight on the basketball court not too long ago.

What kind of message are we sending our young people that enjoy playing basketball, soccer, etc.? Is it going to be the policy of the YMCA to punish everyone who participates in playing the game just because a few kids decide to ignore authorities, ignore the rules, and ignore everything the YMCA stands for?

I certainly don’t think canceling all of the remaining basketball games because of a certain few is the answer. Kids fighting at the YMCA is not the real issue anyway. The real issue is that the YMCA is not providing the proper guidance and supervision! The fact that the kids ignored law enforcement does not surprise me at all. For kids to have respect for authority and for other teammates, they have to have the proper guidance and leadership, and good role models.

GoodWill Gouging ????

Category: General Comments — fatboy @ 3:51 pm

Remember that classic memory in your mind of you and your grandma walking into the door of the GoodWill , you would be looking around hoping no one saw you walking in. That was a classic memory of mine anyways. But as I grew older I realized how important the Goodwill was to our community. It was a place where people who had lost everything in a fire could find things such as clothing and furniture at life saving low prices. Even ones who were just not as fortunate as those shopping at Walmart and such, would shop there on a regular basis. My wife and I are moving into a house, and we need a few peices of furniture so I went to GoodWill here in Bainbridge. I found an old scrached up glass kitchen table with three chairs. Not exactly what I was looking for, but we really cant afford to be picky. So looked at the tag, and it read $169.00 I couldnt believe this. I can buy a new set at WalMart for $ 99.00 So that struck something in me. I began to look around thats when I found a set of three coffee tables, cherry colored. $59.00 a peice. Then I walked further and looked at the clothes rack. Sad to say this, but it was terrible $5.00 for a faded old shirt. I saw a cabbage patch doll that was on the way out so I asked the clerk why this used doll with markings was $20.00 and I then asked her about the expensive prices. She told me that the items were collectibles. The glass table was pricy because it was all glass. Now we all know that this is the reason why the all glass tables have been replaced because of the danger the old glass tops brought. And I looked on Ebay, the dolls were bringing $20.00 new in the box. Not with stains and such. But this tops the cake….
I asked her why it looked as if an employee was taking merchandise out of the back door placing it in her car that was parked in the drop off area. She said that this was a benifit for working there. It seems that GoodWill has turned into a retail price gouging industry.

Winn-Dixie will have a new manager again

Category: General Comments — aidynrain @ 1:55 am

Just thought we would let you know that my husband Sean has not been the store manager at the Winn-Dixie here in town for a couple of weeks. He has been transferred to a store in Tallahassee that would help him in moving into the position he wants. There will be a new store manager there next week and his name is Josh. Josh and my husband trained together at the beginning of last year and Sean reccomended him to the district manager. At the end of this school year we will be moving closer to his work. We have enjoyed our time here and might see some of you at the ball fields when 2 of our daughters play. Thank you to everyone for the warm welcomes!!

Where do you go for your kid’s birthday party?

Category: General Comments — The Showdown @ 11:59 pm

My kid will be celebrating his 9th birthday for the 5th time at the bowling alley. Why you might ask? Because there is simply almost no where else to go. I sat down and asked him what did he think his options would be. He said that Skate Towne would be ok, but he didn’t know too many people that skate. Then the bowling alley, but he did that the past 2 years. Then Burger King but he realized there was nothing to do there. He thought about the new putt-putt course at The Place To Be RV Park, but there would be nothing else to do afterwards. He thought about a pool party at the city pool but it’s really not the weather for that.

Then he thought of places in Tallahassee and named several but you can only take about 2-3 friends there because not a lot of people want there kids to travel to Tallahassee and be away from them that long. We had it a Chucky Cheese 2 years ago with a couple of friends. Tons of fun. Again only a couple of friends though.

So, he decided on the bowling alley again. This is always great fun. You get like 12 of your friend or so for about $80. Again, I ask YOU the public,
Where do you go for your kid’s birthday party?

In a way, when they get older, you can still ask…where can our kids go to have fun? They are extremely limited here in Bainbridge. I know we have a lot of businesses opening here in town. Let’s get someone out there to invest some of this money in our children. If I had the money, I promise you I would open a Chucky Cheese, Fun Station (Tallahassee) , Adventure Land (Dothan), Mountsia (Marietta), etc.

Anyway, just something to think about.

County doing City taxes for NO PAY headline misleading

Category: General Comments — ketil @ 8:43 am

Though the county is not being paid for the county tax commisioner to do the city’s taxes, it is a little misleading in the email headline to say that the county is doing the city taxes for NO PAY. The city IS paying for the work to be done, just not through proper channels.

And, I do agree that if other county resources are being utilized, then the county should be involved. The city should be contracting with the county, not the county tax commisioner. I just think the headline is a little misleading.

Now, we can debate the lack of a proper contract and who signed it and why the city is not going through the county. This is a valid point.

Young Marines Program

Category: General Comments — working_mom @ 10:56 pm

OK THIS IS A SPIN OFF!
Who is going to be the Marine to stand up n say I will do it with this program. I think it’s a good idea. I am sure when my son comes home for break he will be happy to talk to the kids also. When he was home before, he spoke to my daughers 1st grade class. I do feel like it’s the single parent syndrome. Not only single but working parents. I work a lot of hours and I sometimes feel like I don’t get enough time with my daugheter. If it weren’t for positive role models in my daughters life, I would be in trouble. I just gave her a lecture tonight about being around kids that were misbehaving at the bowling alley. ( I was bowling). I told her, If you are around ppl that are misbehaving. They are automaticaly going to associate you with the kids who DID wrong. Even thought you might not have done it. Guilty by association. She is still young and I hope to instill the willingness to leave before you have a chance to get in trouble. You can’t control the decisions others make, but you can control what you do. Maybe, if one kid sets the good example, another will follow.

Manhattan Piano Trio

Category: General Comments — Iron Man @ 9:47 pm

I would like thank Riverside Artsfest for this wonderful recital. I think it was very well attended, maybe about 75% capacity. It was a wonderful evening for my wife and me. I especially enjoyed the Sarsate, Popper and Schoenfield. My wife enjoyed their rendition of Danny Boy (encore). I hope more events like this come through Bainbridge. I would also like to suggest the Arts Council not have free events but rather take a donation of a canned or non-perishable good as a “cover charge.” I would also like to see more young people and teenagers at an event like this. Maybe next time.

Again, thank you so much to the organizers, the Arts Council and the First Presbyterian Church for hosting. All of you are a great asset to this community.

Drill at Hutto

Category: General Comments — pistolero @ 8:49 am

I want to thank Sue for doing an excellent job in covering the active shooter drill at Hutto yesterday. It was a very valuable learning tool for the administration, teachers, students, and law enforcement/EMS. Good job! I know as a parent that I would feel safer sending my kids to school with the quick reaction time exhibited by the Sheriff’s Dept. yesterday. Congratulations! Taking down both shooters in under 5 minutes was awesome.

Addressing Juvenile Delinquency

Category: General Comments — opinionated1 @ 12:51 pm

I work with at risk juveniles and juvenile offenders. We are looking for new ways to handle juvenile delinquency and trying to create new programs and services in the community.
What do you feel is the proper way to address juvenile crime and delinquency in Decatur County?
Are there any services and/or programs that you would like to see in the community?
Have you been a victim of juvenile crime?
What was your experience like and how could it have been better?

I am curious to experiences and ideas so that I can help assist the process to run smoother and serve the needs in the community.

Thanks

Chamber Of Commerce 2006 Program

Category: General Comments — Iron Man @ 9:27 am

I just read the article posted on BainbridgeGa.com. I am amazed that in all of the committees and descriptions of tasks and goals, not one is about developing or attracting NEW business to Bainbridge. Just an observation.

Ain’t it a Shame…

Category: General Comments — Red6 @ 8:49 am

Looking at the Post Searchlight and what do I see?
To the side there are advertisements for jobs here in our county.

The part that is a shame is the ad for PART TIME 911 OPERATORS.
Starting salary is $9.25 per hour, for someone with no experience or training.

The starting salary for EMT-Intermediates in our county, as well as most other countys locally to be fair, is $8.50 per hour. This buys you the services of an individual who has trained for a year or longer in some cases to be knowledgeable, and skilled to react when needed to someone who may be dying before your eyes. Who is expected to jump and run to your aid whether you are lying on the floor at home, or in a bed of broken glass and metal beside a busy highway. Someone who is expected to walk into a dangerous setting to save someone’s life who should have known better than to be there in the first place.

I really don’t see why our EMT’s and Paramedics put up with it, work 24 hours shifts, in all sorts of conditions, heat, cold, rain, busy highways, bars, anywhere there is a need, while our 911 operators work in an air conditioned office.

I am not attacking the 911 operators either, we need good people there, we have good people there too. Both the people in need and the emergency workers trying to get to them depend on a good operator, they deserve their pay, my point is that our EMS people need to be adequately compensated for their service as well.

“A voice crying out in the wilderness of Decatur County corruption.”

Landfill cost overruns

Category: Decatur County Controversy, General Comments — Bandit17 @ 3:37 pm

Does anyone know the total amount of money the engineers for the new landfill project have requested since the project began? How much of this was approved by the County Commission and what % increase over the original contract price are we looking at? In his latest change order request, Mr. Dudley stated that increased costs were due to the delay in getting the required permits. Who was responsible for getting said permits and why did it take so long?
It would seem that in this case the term contract has a different meaning than the normal one which one party agrees to a job at a set cost for another and then does so!

THIS SITE ROCKS!!!!!!!

Category: General Comments — infohungry @ 2:41 pm

You know larry the people that are complaining about this site are the ones that want to hide their heads up their tails and pretend everything is allright. I for one LOVE this site. If not for it i would not know what is going on in my comunity or out and about. The paper rarely prints out the arrest reports and hardly ever prints the incident reports. We as citizens need to know if our neighbor 3 houses down was burglarized so that we might be better prepared or if joe smoe got a DUI and to get out of his path when we see him. One of the first things i check in the morning is this site and by the time the post searchlight comes out on wed and sat i feel like i already read it on here throughout the week. news has been slow lately i must confess but people get overwhelmed sometimes but for the most part the person they called a “hash slinger” ( guess they don’t know the difference between cooking and serving the food as opposed to managing the place” does a pretty good job of informing us citizens of what is happening in our town.
