RIVER SEARCH

Category: General Comments — ordinary citizen @ 11:03 am

I commend the Decatur County Sheriff Department in their search for Mr. Ricky Davis. They showed unending dedication by being out in the cold on the river daily from the early morning hours until the dark of night. Kudos to the Sheriff Department and it’s outstanding staff!!

My heart goes out to the family of Mr. Davis. I had the pleasure of knowing him for many years, since grade school. He will be missed….

Lets start this with a review

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 1:02 am

(Moved to new category - Posted by 1whoknows)

Lets start this comment by reviewing how this controversy started.
Around 1984: Mr.Rentz bought peanuts for a company known as ADM, the parent company of Columbian Peanut Company in West Bainbridge. In an effort to make an extra $300,000 or so(1980’s $) ADM said Mr.Rentz did not deliver said amount of peanuts to their facility. A local employee for the company(a member of Bethel Church, as was Mr Rentz) was made(?) to testify(under oath to GOD) in federal court, that Mr. Rentz did not deliver said amount of peanuts. This was proven to be untrue and Mr. Rentz won the case(a few years later)after enduring financial hardship.

In a later comment to Mr. Rentz this member and pillar of the church vowed to get even.

About 15 years later Mrs. Rentz passed away after a lengthy illness. Prior to this Mr. Rentz asked the chairman of Bethel’s cemetary committee about Mrs. Rentz being buried at Bethel. To which he was told as one of the oldest members she could be buried there. At the time of death none of the leaders of the church came to comfort the family. After Mrs. Rentz had been buried the leaders of the church came and told Mr. Rentz that it was OK for Mrs. Rentz to be there but he could never be buried by his wife of over 50 years. As a result of this Mrs. Rentz was exhumed and buried in a grave at another cemetary.

Now to the present: This member of the church has found a new way to get even. He has come forth in the name of the church and said the church needs to close Sandlin Rd. to build a new youth center. How many youth attend this church? I’m all for youth staying out of trouble but is this just a way to gain public sentiment? Didn’t the church tear down the building that used to be the Pastor’s Parsonage and Sunday school rooms? I remember this building being on the North side of Sandlin Road and in looking at the property believe there is enough land to build a youth center without closing Sandlin Road. Sure Sandlin Rd. may wash out after a 6″ rain, but I dont think this is the only road “taxpayers” have to fix after a heavy rain. Where does the water go? To Mr. Rentz’property. This road has been around for over 100 years and although only 1 family lives on the road it is used by many. Mr. Rentz owns property on both sides of Sandlin Road at the east end. I haven’t heard a request for the east end of Sandlin Road to be closed to join his property together. Wouldn’t this be a valid request? I’m sure the county could close Sandlin Road completely, relocate the family that lives there and raise your taxes a little(if you have to pay any). Has anyone seen plans of the proposed youth center? How many square feet is this center? Why jump on Mr. Rentz, has the other landowner been asked if he would sell Bethel Church enough land to build their youth center? Is closing Sandlin Road the only answer? Is this just an excuse to make a commissioner of 30 years look bad? Seems to be some dissention in our county commission by the comments at the meetings. Why have comments been made about getting rid of the old commissioners? Aren’t these people elected by people in their district? Maybe the ones who are making these statements should put their character on public disply and run for a seat.Perhaps they may already be there.

People seem to judge others by what they perceive, not by what they know. I also ask which family gave Bethel Church the land on the North side of it’s cemetary? I believe this land may have come from the Rentz Family. I think that some members of Bethel Church don’t understand what is going on and others may be using public sympathy to rally others against Mr. Rentz personally and professionally. Seems to me a lot needs to be addressed and made public before the few that scream the loudest have their way. Before making a decision on others faith and morals, question your decision and why it is the only way a solution can be reached.

New High School Questions

Category: General Comments — sirduke @ 3:44 pm

I see where the county is gearing up for a new high school, but I have also heard, but not see in print nor had verified, that the land being purchased belongs to one of our elected offical’s relative. If this is true, doesn’t that raise a red flag with anyone in regards to insider information and perhaps another case of typical Decatur county cronism?

Or am I just being suspicious again?

Lets hear your thoughts, and any facts you may have.

I may need to get a bullet proof vest…

Who is Kenneth Flanders?

Category: General Comments — The Showdown @ 12:06 am

Kenneth Flanders, 50, is running for the office of mayor. He was born and raised in Bainbridge. After graduating in 1973, he left to join the U.S. Army, and later attend college at Dekalb Community College in Clarkston, Ga.

He holds an associate degree in computer science. Flanders said that if he were elected he would work to improve the lives of all Bainbridge citizens and not just one group.

Flanders attends Antioch Baptist Church in Brinson. He is the father of six grown children. And is the service manager at the Tire and Lube Express at Bainbridge Wal-Mart.
I would like to know more about Kenneth Flanders. I have no information on his political background. All I know about him is what has been published in the paper. His degree, his family, where he’s lived, etc. No political background information. This man hasn’t visited anyone I know.
Everyone knows Mark Harrell. He’s a great guy, but there’s that Inland factor. :) I don’t want to get into that.

What Would Jesus Do?

Category: General Comments — man of god @ 3:11 pm

I am disapionted and ashamed of all the people that have (gossiped) or voiced strong opinions in this matter of late.

(a portion here was edited out - Larry)

What the world has a distinct lack of is effective leaders. I mean leaders with morals. That know how to treat a man the way they would want to be treated. You have to ask of the Bethel Church deacons or leaders, is all of this going to save one soul from hell? You have a big family right next door to the church that as far as i know only dennis and his wife actively go to church. How many times have Bethel Church went over and called on this family in the name of god. You have to wonder why we tell our kids WWJD and parents dont live up to it. Over this time period the sandlin thing has been going on, God,s word on sept.25 in the baptist sunday school literature was on joshua, and just last week Charles Stanley,s In Touch magazine, radio, and tv broadcast taught on this very subject. He even told theAtlanta First Babtist Churches testimony on a little piece of land that they needed and the owner would not sell. He went on to tell that he prayed and god led him to joshua, they did what joshua did and the man sold them the property on the 7 th day.(at a better deal). God was giving instruction through this whole deal, was anyone from Bethel listening to god or was they trying to do it mans way. Maybe Fellowship Babtist does have it right not to have deacons. After all they have been continually blessed by god with #1 status in ga. for baptizims 3 years in a row, church growth, people getting saved, and on and on. What makes them different? They go out and seek the lost, fullfilling god,s greatest comandment. It is so easy to put selfish desires such as powerand greed,in the way of gods plan. Be thankfull those of us that are truly saved worship a merciful savior, that no matter what you have done or said that through god he can change all of you and this to the good. My prayer is that all of you saved and not saved go to the church of your choice this sunday and ask god to forgive you, restore you, for gossiping, slandering or what have you.If you are not saved please don,t judge these church folk for they are sinners too. They just need to repent to jesus, as for you if you believe in jesus christ, that he died for your and my sins, and he arose from that grave to give you grace, mercy, and love and the chance for everlasting life in heaven with god all mighty himself, just say that prayer if you really mean it and find you a GOOD BIBLE BASED CHURCH, and follow up with making that public and with baptizm. People lets all pull together and pray that god will work in this ordeal. Let’s not forget that we are to put him first in all things!!!!!!!

New major employer coming?

Category: General Comments — rgironman @ 1:57 pm

I keep hearing on the streets that last few days, that a MAJOR employer is looking hard at our community.
Im told that they will employ up to 1,500.
Anyone w/ inside? Maybe a buddy on Development Authority?

We(our community) needs to give 100% effort to attract such an employer. This would be the “shot in the arm” we need to inject some growth that is bypassing us for neighboring towns.

County Commision Woes

Category: General Comments — sirduke @ 1:18 pm

It seems that everytime I open the paper I see something new going on with the county commisioners. Now Marvin Rentz appears to be escalating the war over Sandlin Road, I thought we had flogged this horse to death.
Then we had the arguments and mudslinging over the firefighters, wars with the county treasurer, etc.

Perhaps it is time for Mr. Rentz to step aside and hand off the reins to someone new who can be more objective and less personally involved. It does appear that his main issue of late is protecting his base of power.

And, as mentioned in prior postings by others, I’ll not hide behind a pen name, allow me to introduce myself, a concerned citizen , Michael Duke.

Hey Captain

Category: General Comments — rgironman @ 11:08 am

I think you’ll find the Post Searchlight reporter made an error when he reoprted a particular council member graduated from UGA. Ask the reporter, then let us know what you find out.
So, since he/she did not graduate, what difference does it make?

I too did not graduate from UGA either, after 2.5 years there, and have no paper on my office walls.
BUT, I’m just as qualified as any other citizen to run for local positions.

What’s your REAL beef here?

Televised Council Meetings

Category: General Comments — rgironman @ 9:43 am

There is going to be a discussion on televising the city council meetings, at the next meeting.
This service to our citizens will be FREE, and a great public service to all.

Please contact your city council member and other officials and express your desire for this FREE service to be approved. We have the local access channel, and there is a private local company launching their own local channel. I’m sure this business would also entertain the idea of airing these meetings.

This service will only make for a better, more informed community.

I think you will be surprised at the tv audience.

I know in a few other towns Im familiar with, its watched heavily, especially when there are “hot” issues being decided.

There are NO negatives related to this that I can think of. ??

I believe it will actually help readership too.

City Council

Category: General Comments — Captain America @ 10:35 am

It is time once again for the City Council to meet again tomorrow night.
(-editted out a portion, Larry-)

Question - How well do we check out the credentials of someone running for city council? Have they really done all they claim to have done, i.e. College Degrees, business accomplishments, etc.? It may be worth checking in to.

Are Our Nurses Safe

Category: General Comments — Jerry @ 5:27 pm

I am really upset that Bdge.Mem. Hosp. seems to not care about our Nurses safety.
As many know the hospital has built a new parking lot for the employees.
It is way down on the east end past the Nursing Home.
The staff are required to walk this distance in order to get into the hospital.
Now my complaint is not so much the distance but rather the safety for those who work nights.
Case in point. A Lady was robbed this very morning around 4:30 am via gun point and her purse taken, she was a employee just coming into work. And this happened in the OLD parking lot which is much closer.
On Most nights there are two security Guards on duty, How can these two or even 3 be around to walk the Nurses and staff to and from their cars and more so protect them from harm.
Before the suggestions start, let me say this. The employees have already been told that they are not allowed to park in the Drs office spaces across the street and not mentioned by name but was told about even public parking lots such as the Mall across the street. ( I know that this is public so they cannot really stop this ) My point still being that they insist on using the new parking lot.
My wife is a nurse and works 7p to 7a They are being told that anyone who arrives before 8pm MUST park in the new lot.
Let me ask you will my wife now be safe coming to a job where Her primary responsability is to take care of the ill? Or will she become one or maybe even worse. I pray this does not happen But if it does Will the Hospital then be responsible.
I think perhaps the Adminstration at the Hospital should re look at this and do it soon. The New LAW goes in to effect starting Monday the 17th of Oct.
Please let me know your thoughts on this and perhaps any solutions ??
Thank You
Jerry

Taste of Bainbridge

Category: General Comments — Iron Man @ 12:18 pm

I just wanted to comment that the Chef Sampler last evening was excellent! Thanks to all of the organizers for such a wonderful event. I would gladly attend 2-3 such events per year if they had them. Great time for a great cause. The only thing that could have been better was some light jazz or classical music in the background. If you missed out this year, make plans for the next one, I know we are.
