Broken Window Theory

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 3:41 pm

Adjudicator writes

True for our area?

The Broken Window theory was the brainchild of the criminologists James Q. Wilson and George Kelling. They argued that crime is the inevitable result of disorder. If a window is broken and left unrepaired, people walking by will conclude that no one cares and no one is in charge. Soon, more windows will be broken, and the sense of anarchy will spread from the building to the street on which it faces and then beyond, sending a signal that anything goes.

Boating on the Flint

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 5:10 pm

dorsey writes

Everyone enjoys the Flint River, but the weekend boaters show no respect for the land owners.  The speed boats do high speed turns in front of our docks and bank areas with no regards about bank erosion or damage to property. There is a lot of river area away from residents where no damage would exist, but like everyone else no thought occurs.
And we do NOT enjoy your boom boxes!  The water magnifies the sound and rattles our windows.

Thanks, Old River Rat

What going on??

heartbroke07 writes

What going on in Bainbridge. The gas rises and everything goes down. American Fibers and Yarn is closing the doors this month and there are hardly any jobs in Bainbridge. What about those single mothers, or husband and wifes who both are employed there? What are they expected to do, just start over? With the gas prices and living cost how are we expected to make it?

My heart goes out to the AFY employees. Just pray, God works in mysterious ways!

Business Owners and Citizens…

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 4:45 am

hwhite writes

After tonight I am beginning to believe it is OK to most in this county and city for children under 21 years of age to drink. This includes, unfortunately a specific business in town. The other nite there were kids that are gathering somewhere and drinking large amounts of alcohol. One said she is going to go start out at a local drinking business and then joining the party.

Oh Well, That’s the Chain Gang

I can’t imagine but all must feel the same way I do about the guards that allowed an inmate to be beaten and threatened for hours. You see this kind of stuff on TV but when it happens to someone’s brother, it truly hits home.

Who are we kidding?

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 4:36 am

My husband and I went to participate in early voting. When I looked at the Georgia Referendum section, I had to read it two and three times just to make certain I fully understood it. I really hate to say this but I don’t think we have 18 year olds, 19 year olds, or even some 20 year olds that are going to hardly understand a couple of these because of the wording.

I would encourage everyone to go here and read these three Amendments to familiarize yourself with them and have a few extra minutes to chew on them. I would challenge folks as well if you know an 18 year old to see how many of them can tell you exactly what is being proposed in each one. They are not horrible but I don’t believe they are worded for the average Joe. It feels great to have voted early-the husband wishes our tv would be exempt from political ads now that we did vote.

What kind of city do we live in?

mechancey writes

I just recently moved into the city area near college street. On Sunday me and my son took our family dog for a walk down college street to the play ground. We decided to walk around the cemetery. I am so ashamed to see a cemetery look like this. Never before have i ever seen anything so unkept.

Not on a school night…

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 2:41 pm

Just one person writes

I just wanted to share a thought on Bikefest. We live near the area where Bikefest is held each year.  My concern is this….each year we can hear very vividly every word and song through the sound system. My family actually gets a kick out of being able to hear it in the afternoon and early evening. I do think that there should be an earlier cut off time for this event during the school nights.

It’s all about relationships! You can have an IQ of 180, but if you are not able to relate to and maintain relationships with others, you are not intelligent and you will not succeed! You did not get to where you are by yourself and you will not remain there without the assistance and support of others.

Gas Shortage?

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 10:11 pm

akilling writes

Can someone tell me iIs there any truth to the Gasoline shortage rumors I’ve heard today. I know I was coming home and cars are filling out the gas stations. I also heard that the terminal in town had no gas, is there any truth to this or is someone one pulling our strings so that we all go nuts and fill someone’s pockets?

SPLOST:

Category: General Comments — Larry @ 5:52 am

Bandit17 writes

SPLOST: Free money for our local governments to spend on their wish lists.
We have a special election to renew the special purpose local option sales TAX coming up that the city and county hope and EXPECT that we will blindly approve once again. This special election will cost the taxpayers $20,000. Please take the time to think about this question.

Our elected officials have already started spending this money. They do not give the voters much credit for having good sense. Some people would lead us to believe that property taxes will go up in an amount equal to what this TAX would collect. That simply is not true. They would have to look at their out of control spending and perhaps do without some expensive but unnecessary things.

If nothing else, remember that property tax is deductible on our federal and state tax returns. Sales tax is NOT! (that is unless you pay more sales tax than state income tax, then you can claim it and give up the state tax deduction.)
Property taxes in Decatur County have gone up significantly last year and this. It is time we stood up and made our voices heard! Vote No On The Splost!
