The Bainbridge High School Air Force Junior ROTC Competition Drill Team continued their “march” toward one of their most successful competition year’s in the fifteen year history of the program.
Standing Left to right: Cadets Stephen Dunn, Glorietta Williams, Christopher Campbell, Bitisha Hamilton, Gage Proper, Avery Chestnut, Alex Higley, Adam Anderson, Bradley Allen, Tiffany Blocker, Charsuede Keaton, Elizabeth Hill, Jasmine Horne, Rebecca Schoeneman, Charles Screen, Nadia Cerisier, Andrew Davidson, and Asilynne Strickland. Kneeling left to right: Cadet Team Commanders Darren Good, Derrick Akins, Ryan Schoeneman, Jessica Merritt, and Erick Juarez.
Led by team commanders Jessica Merritt, Derrick Akins, Darren Good, Erick Juarez and Ryan Schoeneman the team captured nine trophies in competition against 11 drill teams and 14 color guard teams. Cadet Merritt’s team won 1st Place in Inspection and 2nd Place in Regulation Drill, Cadet Akins Color Guard won 2nd Place, Darren Good led his Armed Team to three trophies (2nd in Inspection, 2nd in Drill and 3rd in Exhibition), and Erick Juarez’s team was 3rd in Inspection.
The Overall Championship was close, with the Bearcats achieving 2nd Place trophies in both the “Armed Division” and the “Unarmed Division”. The competition was held at Valdosta State University on February 21st.
According to Colonel Breedlove, “This team has been very successful. They have been first or second in ‘Overall Championships’ three times this school year and have won at least two trophies at every drill meet, including national competition. I don’t think we’ve had this level of success in the past, even though we have had terrific teams for years. I would like for the people of Decatur County to know that many of the schools we face have drill teams that are larger than our entire cadet enrollment. So, the accomplishments of these dedicated cadets is more impressive given the extra work necessary to compete against larger teams. "
Colonel Breedlove continued, "For the remainder of the year, we may compete at Florida State University next month but we will definitely compete at ‘The Nationals’ at Daytona Beach, Florida in May. The Daytona Meet is this best run and most competitive of all the drill meets we experience each year. We appreciate the support of our school leaders and the community as we do our best to favorably represent Bainbridge High School.”
