Tanning beds are busy, stores are filled with shoppers and bags are being packed, all in anticipation of Spring Break which begins on March 31st for Decatur County students.

Spring Break is a time our young people look forward to each year.  A time to be with their friends, have fun and get away from mom and dad for a few days.

By following a few safety tips, Spring Break can be a memorable time in the teenage years.

Don't forget the sunscreen (SPF 15 is recommended).

Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration.

Watch out for traffic.  The streets around the bars, hotels and clubs are always busy.

Travel in groups. Don't let your friends wander off with strangers.  Just because it's Spring Break doesn't mean the predators take the month off.

Watch out for the riptide and rip currents. If caught in it, swim parallel to shore until you are out of the rip current, then swim towards the beach.

Balcony jumping is a big no no.

Keep your hotel rooms locked.  Never give anyone you do not know your room number, or allow them in your room.

Protect your personal belongings such as money, cameras, ipods, etc.

The drinking age is 21.  Bartenders, cops and judges won't forget this, so don't try.

Watch your drinks of any kind.  There are people who would spike your drink.  Don't give them a chance.

Have a Safe Spring Break.
