When you find 12 and 14 year old children assaulting police officers, one can not help but wonder what can be done to help correct the problem. There were at least 2 incidents of juvenile violence against police within the last week.
On Monday afternoon, Captain Jack Bunting turned around on Planter Street to check on a juvenile attempting to hide. When he did, the juvenile took off running. Officer Alton Brock caught him a couple of blocks away, asked him his name and began to search him. The 12 year old juvenile refused to give his name and began yelling "sue for xxxking with a black man". He continued with slurs like "nothing but a bunch of xxssy ass white crackers".
At left is a portion of Officers struggle on the Bypass and arriving at the jail.
At that point, 12 year old Lavaski Williams was released. Williams started walking away and yelling out at the top of his voice xxck you xxssy ass white folks.
Officer Brock arrested Lavaski Williams for disorderly conduct and transported him to Bainbridge Public Safety.
During the time the 12 year old was being processed, he became extremely unruly and began slamming his head into the wall and continuing the harassing speech. Lavaski Williams was placed in the back of the patrol car for his transport to the Decatur County Jail.
On the Highway 84 Bypass, Williams was able to get his handcuffs from behind his back and attempted to open the door of the patrol car. Officer Brock stopped the car to make sure the door was locked using the child safety feature.
Then, less than a quarter mile later, Williams was beating his head against the safety glass in the patrol car and Officer Brock had to stop again.
Officer Brock started the transport again but Williams again got his handcuffs back in front of him. They again stopped and Captain Jack Bunting, Cpl Aaron Brown and Officer Hank Day arrived to assist.
In the process of further securing the 12 year old, Williams kicked Captain Jack Bunting and tried to bite Officer Brock. After a short struggle, he was secured using two sets of handcuffs and one pair of leg irons.
Williams arrived at the Decatur County Jail while screaming at the top of lungs "xxck you you bunch of white cracker son of xxtches" and that I will kill all of you xxtches you just wait and see this is not over.
Williams was charged with disorderly conduct, terroristic threats and acts, damage to property and obstruction/resisting arrest. We understand that 12 year old Lavaski Williams had been home from his most recent stay in Blakely for only a couple of days.
Female, 14, Assaults Officers
A 14 year old female juvenile was charged with 2 counts of felony obstruction and assault last Friday evening. She purposely kicked Officer Travis Martin in the face and continued to punch Officer Eric Duke in the face and body.
As the football game was ending, two 14 year old females were involved in a brawl in the Elcan King School parking lot. Officer Collin Hastey reports that he assisted School Resource Officers Eric Duke and Travis Martin in restraining the 2 girls.
Officers Duke and Martin reported that when they tried to intervene, one juvenile became combative towards the officers in an attempt to free herself to further assault the other juvenile. Once the offenders were on the ground, one juvenile deliberately kicked SRO Martin in the face and punched SRO Duke in the face and body.
Officers Gary Hines and Hastey arrived to find the 2 officers on the ground attempting to restrain the girls. They gained control of the girls but one continued to attempt to get away, even though she was in handcuffs.
One juvenile was charged with affray and the 2nd juvenile was charged with two counts of felony obstruction of officers for assaulting Officers Duke and Martin, one count of obstruction, and affray.
Both 14 year old girls were transported to Bainbridge Public Safety and processed. The on-call juvenile official was contacted and advised to release both girls to their families.
