Bearcats Over Americus 14-6

We received the kickoff and after a nice runback gave us decent field position, we turned it over with an interception.  Americus-Sumter took the ball, and with a couple of passes and running right at us, drove down the field.  They had a 1st down on our 13 yard line but our defense held them there.  With a 4th and 12, they kicked a field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 4.30 left in the first quarter.

On our next possession we were 3 and out and kicked.  Americus could do nothing and kicked the ball back to us with a minute left in the quarter.  We took the punt and returned it for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead that we never relinquished.

In the 2nd quarter (2nd qtr highlights below), the Bearcat defense held and after their punt we had the ball at the 49 yard line.  We drove down to the 20 but missed on a field goal attempt.  Americus took over on our 20 yard line, but we stopped them again.  A nice run back on their punt, and we had a 1st and 10 at their 33.  We couldn't do much from there and our field goal attempt was blocked with a little over 2 minutes left in the half.

They recovered the blocked kick and began at our 13 yard line.  Two pass plays later and they had it on their 42 with a minute left in the half.  A sack took them back to their 34 with a 3rd and 18.  But a couple of plays later and they were on our 23 with 7 seconds left.  An incomplete pass and a missed field goal took us into half time in the lead 7-3.

Americus took the 2nd half kickoff and drove down the field to our 21 yard line whee we stopped them.  They kicked a field goal to bring the score to 7-6 at about half way through the quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, we ran the ball back to their 31 yard line, one man away from a touchdown.  Two plays later, a terrific jump pass, and an even better catch brought us down to their 11 with a first down.  Tough running took the ball in from the 4 and gave us a 14-6 lead with about 4 minutes to play in the 3rd.

Americus took the kickoff and began to drive until we got an interception and took over at the 38 yard line.  We couldn't do anything with it and punted from about the 50.  With no rush on the punt, we were able to down the ball at their 2 yard line.

The Bearcat defense stopped their runs but a long pass got them out to the 35 yard line as the 3rd quarter closed.

Early in the 4th quarter, Americus had a 4th down and 3, faked a punt and made their first down.  Americus continued to drive down the field until, even with offensive interference, we intercepted again.  We took over at our 15 yard line.  A quick pass over the line and run brought the ball out to the 46 yard line. 

Unfortunately, with 6.20 left in the game, Americus intercepted our pass at the 27.  Three incomplete passes later, they punted back to us.  The balance of the game was back and forth leaving the final score 14-6.
