A sexual assault was reported in Cairo Monday night about 2 am.  The suspect was identified as driving a semi heading towards Bainbridge.  Sheriff's Deputies and Public Safety responded to Highway 84 east to intercept him.  911 reported that the truck was a white gas semi with a white male driver.

Deputies Nick Godwin and Vince Edmond spotted a similar semi and made a stop several miles into Decatur County.  The driver was questioned and held for a few minutes.

About that same time Public Safety Cpl Nigel Hurst stopped a semi at Whigham Dairy Road.  When he asked the driver about the incident, the driver said "I told him not to pick up that girl."  He also reported the drivers name as David Rigdon, driving a Gish Oil of Valdosta truck.

Grady county Deputies reported they were behind 2 semi's coming in Decatur County they were having a hard time stopping.  Deputies Godwin, Edmond and Steve Black had blue lights lighting up the highway and stepped out signaling the 2 trucks to stop.  David Rigdon was the driver of one of those trucks.

From what we understand, the female was walking along the road in Cairo around 1:30 am and Mr Rigdon picked up her up.  He dropped her off a few minutes later whereupon she reported that she had been assaulted.

The female was brought to the scene by Cairo Police where she identified Mr Rigdon as the man that assaulted her.  At that point, Cairo arrested him for sexual battery.
