Caught Running with Copper

The Sheriff's heavy patrols in the Brinson area paid off again on Tuesday night about 3:30 am.

Captain Eddie Williams and Cpl Michael Logue were in the area of Hwy 253 south and Hwy 310.  A maroon Lincoln heading north on Hwy 253 looked like their trunk was heavy so Deputy Logue pulled out to get behind him.

Shawn Keith Smith saw him and took off.  He turned on Bethany Church Road and when Deputy Logue turned behind him, all he could see was a cloud of dust.  Other deputies in the area covered surrounding roads as Deputy Logue continued.

From a distance, another deputy spotted the car turning north on Stubbs Road.  Deputy Steve Black was at one end of Bubber road and when Shawn Smith spotted the lights he turned around and headed back.  Deputy Logue was right there and left no place but the ditch for him to find.

Deputy Logue was in the process of handcuffing Smith when he made a sudden move and jerked his arm.  His K9 partner reached up and took hold of his arm and restrained Keith Smith.  Mr Smith decided he wasn't going anywhere.

In the trunk they discovered plumbing from several urinal fixtures, a load of copper wire and a can of fuel.  Sgt Pat Trolinger stated they would be contacting Seminole County and searching public rest rooms in that area to find where they were taken from.

About an hour later, Cpl Logue, working with a Seminole County Deputy, found the fixtures ripped from the public rest rooms at Rays Lake Park in Seminole County.

That allowed deputies to add a stolen copper charge, along with a host of traffic charges, against 29 year old Shawn Keith Smith.
