Honoring the USS Georgia (SSGN 729) Return To Service
The great State of Georgia is proud to welcome its namesake the USS GEORGIA home. “Bring the Georgia home” has echoed throughout the state for years. It’s finally happening with the Return to Service (RTS) of the OHIO Class Submarine, USS GEORGIA (SSGN 729), heralding a significant milestone for the Submarine Force, the Navy and the Joint Warfighter Alliance.
Below, officials with the Georgia flag that will be presented to the Captain of the USS Georgia. The flag is traveling through every Georgia County before the presentation late this month.
The Illustrations show operational activities of the USS GEORGIA, which has undergone conversion from a Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN) to a Guided Missile Submarine (SSGN) designation.
Four Ohio class submarines have been transformed to the new conventional weapons platform. They are the USS Georgia, USS Ohio, USS Michigan, and USS Florida. SSGNs have the capability and targeting systems to launch up to 154 Tomahawk missiles; a significant increase in capacity as compared to other platforms.
In addition to Tomahawk missiles, the twenty-two (22) missile tubes provide the capability to launch other payloads such as: unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Special Forces equipment.
This new platform includes capabilities to carry and support more than 66 Navy Seals (Sea, Air and Land) and insert them, under clandestine conditions, into target areas.
The formal RTS ceremony and reception will be by invitation only. This exciting and patriotic ceremony will seat as many as 4000 invited guests and be showcased by local and national media at Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, Georgia on March 28, 2008
