Recently the 5th grade students at Hutto Middle School had the opportunity to experience first-hand some of the subjects associated with the agricultural community in Decatur County.
On Thursday, May 17, 2012, Decatur County 4-H in conjunction with the Decatur County Farm Bureau, hosted an Ag-science Field Day for around 400 students at Hutto Middle School. As a partner in 5th grade education, Decatur County 4-H has held monthly Ag-Science lessons in the classroom. The faculty and staff were instrumental in ensuring that the culminating event was a success.
The Field Day was divided into a morning and afternoon session with each split into different segments. Students were able to rotate through six different stations which included classes with the Wild Turkey Federation, Decatur County Fire and Rescue, the Mobile Dairy from Athens, the Department of Natural Resources – Fisheries Division, and Senior 4-H’ers presenting projects on plants and poultry.
The youth participated in hands-on activities and received snacks made available by the Decatur Young Farmers Association. Take home bags filled with agricultural related materials were also provided capping off a fun filled day of agrarian based education.
