Memorial Hospital and Manor celebrated National Hospital Week and National Nursing Home Week with employees, volunteers, physicians and Hospital Authority members on May 11th with an annual awards program and picnic lunch.

The presentation of the prestigious Julia C. Rogers “Excellence in Service” Award was the highlight of an informal awards program, which also included the presentation of service pins.  The Julia C. Rogers “Excellence in Service” Award is given annually “to a Memorial Hospital and Manor employee whose commitment to serving patients extends beyond assigned responsibilities and whose caring efforts offer inspiration to others.”  The award has been given annually since 1990 in honor of the late Mrs. Julia C. Rogers, a Memorial Hospital and Manor nurse whose compassion and commitment touched patients, as well as employees, of the hospital and nursing home.

Billy Walker, CEO, presenting the award to Judy Phillips.

The recipient of this award is nominated by his peers and selected on qualities such as courteousness, consideration, gentleness, respectfulness and helpfulness.  The 2012 Julia C. Rogers Award was presented to Judy Phillips, LPN, Director of Willow Ridge, a personal care facility owned by the Hospital Authority of the City of Bainbridge and Decatur County. Phillips has served as Director of Willow Ridge since it opened in 1998, and she previously worked as an LPN on the Med/Surg unit of Memorial Hospital and Manor.

In the award nomination submitted by her peers, Phillips was described as someone who is endlessly committed to Willow Ridge and Memorial Hospital and Manor.  The nomination stated, “She works many hours, holding special functions for the residents and always has their best interest at heart.  She is a silent, but strong, force who is dedicated to service excellence. She is a BRIDGE.”  BRIDGE is an acronym used in Memorial Hospital and Manor’s new customer service program, “BRIDGE to Excellence.”     Phillips said she was surprised and honored to receive the Julia C. Rogers Award. She said that her staff deserves the award for all they do to help residents.

Shawn Surratt, M.D., Chief of Staff of Memorial Hospital and Manor, expressed appreciation to everyone on behalf of the medical staff for their dedication to patients and the teamwork that is exhibited in their work every day.

Auxiliary volunteers were recognized for donating 5883 hours of service to Memorial Hospital and Manor last year.  Jimmy Blalock was honored for giving the most volunteer hours with a total of 501 hours throughout the year. Bonnie Harrison was second with 362 hours and Maxine Holton was third with 257 hours.
