On Thursday, April 12, 2012 a two-month old baby was taken to Bainbridge Memorial. According to reports at approximately 10:54 p.m. Bainbridge Public Safety was notified to contact DFCS personnel.

Sgt. Dollar spoke with DFCS who stated that DFCS had been notified by the National Child Abuse hotline that Shamiah Rainey and Deonte Smith had taken the infant to the hospital with bruises on her chin, face and abdomen and was also bleeding from both eyes. Sgt. Dollar was also told that the infant was unresponsive and had been transfered to Tallahassee.

The case was turned over to Bainbridge Public Safety Investigator Chris Jordan and GBI Special Agent Mike Walsingham.

Deonte Tvaris Smith, 21 of 6060 Hebrew Rd. Donalsonville was arrested April 17th and charged with murder and cruelty to children by Investigator Jordan.

The report did not state why a report wasn't made by the Bainbridge Memorial Hospital pediatrician or other hospital staff to Bainbridge Public Safety when the infant was presented there.
