On Tuesday, March 27, the Bainbridge Middle School baseball team will take to its home field for the last time this season. Under the direction of first year head coach Brian McCorkle Bainbridge Middle has amassed a 12-4 record. A record that is good enough to earn them the right to host the first round of the conference tournament.
The Bearcats opponent in the opening round will be a familiar foe. The Indians of nearby by Whigham will invade Bearcat field and try to do something that has eluded them three times this year. Bainbridge is 3-0 against Whigham this season.
The two teams met for a double header back in February which the Cats swept 4-3 and 11-3. They latter clashed in a huge conference battle two weeks later with the Bearcats coming out on top 12-0. Despite the wins from earlier in the year the Bearcat coach knows his team has got to be ready to play. “They have a good team there is no doubt about that. We are going to have to come ready to play and hope some things go our way. We are going to have to get good starting pitching, good defense, and we are going to have to score some runs.”
Whigham is 4-4 in conference play with their only losses coming to the four teams that finished ahead of them in the standings. When asked how the team was feeling about the upcoming contest Coach McCorkle told us that “Our kids are excited. They know that we are facing a quality opponent in Whigham and that we will need to play our best ball if we are going to have a chance to win.”
Based upon Tuesday’s outcome the Bearcats will play their second round game in either Whigham or Cairo as those will be the host sites for the rest of the tournament. The winner of the Bainbridge-Whigham game will face the winner of the Baconton-Pelham contest which will also be held on Tuesday. The two winners will play on Friday with the losers bracket game being played on Thursday.
