This is the week to show the Bainbridge-Decatur County Animal Shelter how much we appreciate all the hard work and long hours they spend to protect, nourish and love our 4-legged friends. It's National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, November 2-8 and time to remember how important the shelter is to the area.
Since taking over the shelter in late 2004, over 12,000 animals have been taken to our animal shelter. While some were pets that could no longer be cared for, others hadn't ever known a warm bed, regular care or a kind word. There are hundreds of success stories for both the animals and their new owners, but there is much more to the work that the shelter staff does.
Working with the schools, the shelter staff and board have helped children learn how to care for animals. They have also been active in bringing more awareness to the community about the spayed and neuter programs and have provided free services over the years to help control the pet population.
To help offset costs, the shelter has hosted many fund raising efforts but there is always more need than money. Want to show them how appreciated they and the shelter services are? Here are some ideas: canned dog and cat food (especially cat), old towels, blankets, rugs, socks, toys and treats, shampoo, cleaners and of course, they can always use the money donations.
Want to find a great way to spend time with the kids and teach them about 'giving back'? Volunteers are always needed to walk the dogs or spend time playing and socializing the cats.
