| Susan Ray Public Relations Director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee |
The largest in the United States and only 1 of 9 in the world, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee draws over 1,000 visiting scientists each year. This according to Susan Ray, Director of Public Affairs.
Ray, speaking at a recent Bainbridge Rotary meeting stated that the Magnet Lab, as it is commonly referred to, is used by scientists for basic research in physics, biology, bioengineering, chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, materials science and engineering.
While most of the complex is at Florida State University, there are also branches at the University of Florida and at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. The UF facility employees over 450 staff and faculty and support staff. Originally located at MIT, the Magnet Lab was relocated to UF in 1994.
Ray stated that currently researchers are:
*Working to unlock the mysteries of superconductors that have potential to revolutionize the electric power industry
*Improving the contrast agents for magnetic response images to make MRIs in high definition
*Analyzing chemical compounds in crude oil to cut refinery and drilling costs and reduce air pollution
*Studying tiny magnetic fields carried by electrons
*Studying human proteins and the way they work in cells aimed at developing a new generation of drugs to attack many illnesses caused by viruses
The Magnet Lab also offers opportunities for the community to receive hands on experiences Ray stated. The annual Open House is held each February. Online, teachers, students and anyone interested in the use of magnets, history and research can visit the website, tours can also be arranged.
The Magnet Lab Outreach has also made several trips to our community schools. They are returning to Elcan King on March 2nd and also visited the school last fall.
