The Hall of Fame honors municipal officials who exemplify the best in public service, and who, throughout their careers, have made extraordinary contributions to their communities and Georgia’s cities.

Luther Conyers, who has served on the Bainbridge council for 30 years, was recognized for his service to the city and the community.

“An educator by profession, he chose politics as an opportunity to reach out and help his fellow citizens,” said GMA Executive Director Jim Higdon. “As one of his friends said, ‘His hope is and always has been to see people come together as human beings and just see each other as people.’”

Many from Bainbridge were on hand as Mr. Conyers was recognized including family, friends and City Officials.

Conyers’ contributions to Bainbridge include the adoption of the combined Public Safety concept; development of a city-wide master plan to guide the expansion of water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure; and the passage of 30 city budgets that never included an ad valorem tax increase. Conyers has also taken great interest in the youth of the city, participating annually in the Student Government Day Program and supporting the construction of modern recreation facilities.

Within GMA, Conyers has served as chairman of the Municipal Training Board, a district officer for District 10, a member and chairman of the Georgia Municipal Employees Benefit System Board of Trustees and has been an ardent supporter of the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade.

Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and consulting services to its 500 member cities.
