Drawing on the wisdom of George Washington, Bainbridge College’s Graduation speaker inspired his listeners with positive and productive ways of living. Among those 1,100 listeners were the first graduates of the Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Program that began in 2006.
Dr. James A. Burran, who retired at the end of February as Dalton State College president, focused his remarks on the book, George Washington’s Code of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation. He quoted several of the book’s 110 maxims that Washington learned as a youth about how to treat others and how to practice self-control.
Before becoming Dalton State’s president in 1995, Dr. Burran served as a history faculty member, registrar, vice president for academic affairs, and acting president at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
He was introduced by Bainbridge College (BC) President Dr. Tom Wilkerson, with whom he had worked almost 25 years in the University System of Georgia (USG).
For the May 9 graduation at Decatur County Memorial Coliseum Regent Doreen Poitevint of Bainbridge brought greetings from the USG Board of Regents. She serves as the regent for 2nd District.
Also on the program were Cynthia Davis, professor of nursing and wellness, who was parade marshal; Pastor Andy McQuaid of Grace Church, Bainbridge, who gave the invocation and benediction; Student Government Association President Gabriel Broxton of Donalsonville, who spoke, and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Mariam Dittmann, who recognized faculty and honor graduates and assisted President Wilkerson in the conferring of degrees. With BC since January, this was Dr. Dittmann’s first BC graduation.
The BC Foundation gave a reception after the ceremonies. Assisting with it and with graduation were BC Ambassadors and Student Ambassadors.
For the second year the college prepared coloring pages of academic regalia and BC scenes for younger members in the audience to enjoy with crayons provided by Victims’ Services.
The college had 259 graduates with about 130 participating in the ceremonies. Among them are students in the first two cohorts of the ADN program. The first cohort completed their studies after graduation of 2007 and received their pins last August; they were eligible for graduation this year. The second cohort completed studies this year and received their pins in ceremonies May 3.
