Empty Food Banks Get Help

Thanks to a caring community, the Salvation Army and the Family Connection Hunger Prevention Coalition have added about $1,000 worth of food to their food banks.

Bainbridge High School Interact members stood by the entrance for 3 hours Saturday morning. Left to right are: Allison Howard, Carly Brock, Ashley Wimberly and Ashlee Pollock.

Saturday morning volunteers from both organizations were joined by students representing Bainbridge College Circle K, Bainbridge High School Interact and CATS club members and Grace Christian Academy. Together with adult volunteers, they gathered outside of the Bainbridge Wal-Mart SuperCenter and solicited donations from shoppers as they entered and exited the store.

Bainbridge High CATS members worked with Grace Christian Academy students in the afternoon with Salvation Army at the garden entrance while other Grace students and Peter McClendon were at the grocery entrance.

With prices for food and gas climbing daily, some of our area residents find themselves in need of help. Many of those in need are the working poor and those on fixed income. Donations are also low due to the economic conditions but the generosity shown Saturday will go a long way in stocking the food banks shelves.

Many area agencies have joined the Family Connection's Hunger Prevention Coalition. Those involved are the Salvation Army, Communities In Schools, Decatur County Schools, St. John's Episcopal Church, First United Methodist Church, Decatur County Senior Center. LIFE, Harvest Ministries and Beyond, Bainbridge College, BainbridgeGa.com and concerned citizens.

A huge thank you to Grace students:  Emily Ray, Daniel Ray, Taylor Key, Savannah Key, Courtney Key, Abbey Smith. Bainbridge High School CATS:  Jordan Jackson, Brittany Brooks, Bridget Stephens, Shirelle Clark, Porchia Bowden. Bainbridge College Circle K:  Brittany Daniel. Bainbridge High School Interact Club: Allison Howard, Carly Brock, Ashley Wimberly and Ashlee Pollock. Also Peter and Lisa McClendon, Sheila Reynolds and Barbara Snell and the staff and management of Wal-Mart.
