Jimmy Scott, 34 and volunteer, Peggy Richardson, have been meeting this past year on Monday evenings at the LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) Center.

Jimmy Scott, Peggy Richardson and LIFE Director Debbie McIntyre

Jimmy was working towards his GED and Peggy offered to tutor him.  As they were working on GED preparation, Jimmy mentioned that he would like to obtain a Commercial Driver's License.  He has been working in the plant nursery industry and wanted a better job.  So, with the help of the CDL manual, Peggy and Jimmy began studying.

Each Monday, they would do the GED lessons for part of their time, then study the CDL manual for the rest.  As Jimmy became ready for the written portion of the tests, he would take them and pass.  Finally, the Driving and Pre-Trip Inspection examination was at hand.  After studying one last time, Jimmy passed the test with ease.  He said that he was very prepared and wanted the examiner to ask more questions than he did!

Jimmy said that this step is a piece of the puzzle to a better future.  He realizes that to provide for his wife and child, he needs a better job along with his GED.  He can now earn a better wage while working on his GED. He also wants to help others accomplish what he has.

Jimmy credits Peggy with her patient teaching.  He appreciates the one on one attention and has learned much about language and parts of speech.  Peggy mentioned that she never thought she would know so much about driving trucks!

This is an example of what one person can do to change the life of another.  Peggy has been an incredible volunteer with Jimmy.  Peggy stated that this is her way to 'Pay It Forward', as she has had people help her in the past. Peggy is dedicated and enjoys being able to help others. This is the second person she has tutored and she plans on doing it again.

LIFE, the Decatur County Certified Literate Community Program, offers many ways to help others change their lives.  Please contact Debbie McIntyre at 243-0600, if you are interested in helping someone.  For information about obtaining a GED or enrolling in class, contact the Adult Education Learning Center at 248-2210.
