Merrie 'Allyson' Lumpkin has been named as one of only 12 students in the country to serve on the SADD National Student Leadership Council.  Allyson has served as president of the Bainbridge High School chapter for the past two years.  SADD is Students Against Destructive Decisions.

"I look forward to seeing SADD on a larger national scale as we strive to reach greater heights by encouraging teens across the nation to make wise decisions."  Allyson stated.  "I am also looking forward to helping implement campaigns that concern the physical and psychological health of teens."

SADD Executive Director Penny Wells wrote to Allyson, "Your talents and abilities, coupled with your leadership and compassion make you well qualified to hold this important post."

"Allyson's leadership and her work and dedication to issues affecting teens make her a great choice to join SADD National's Student Leadership Council," said Stephen Wallace, chairman and chief executive officer of SADD. "We will now rely on Allyson to use her experiences on the state and local levels to help guide our organization as we work nationally to develop programs that will positively influence teens when it comes to choices about alcohol and drug use, as well as other potentially destructive behaviors."

Allyson Lumpkin has been actively involved in SADD since the program began in the 2006-2007 school year.  SADD began 25 years ago and was originally Students Against Drunk Driving. Today, SADD chapters have expanded their focus. SADD now highlights prevention of all destructive behaviors and attitudes that are harmful to young people, including underage drinking, substance abuse, impaired driving, violence and suicide.

The Bainbridge High School SADD chapter continues to be involved in activities promoting a healthy lifestyle for their peers.
With the help of the Decatur County Sheriff's Office, SADD members have participated in several road safety checks, on the BHS campus and in the county.  Last Wednesday the road safety check was held at BHS.

According to Decatur County Sheriff's Capt. Cecilia Willis, SADD members issued 18 citations for failure to wear seatbelt, 1 citation for improper license (out of state license when living here) and 6 citations for drivers having a class CP (learner's permit) or no license at all. Members have also participated in National Red Ribbon Week.  Advisors are Heather Savage and Sheila Taylor.

Understanding the importance of getting these messages out to her peers, Allyson applied to become a member of SADD National Student Leadership Council.  The council is comprised of 12 members from all over the United States and formulates recommendations on SADD policies and activities.  They also help coordinate the 2009 SADD National Conference.  During her year, Allyson will be called upon to represent SADD at various conferences, media events and public occasions.

Allyson's term on the Student Leadership Council will begin at the SADD National Conference.  It will be held in Phoenix, Arizona June 22nd through June 25th.  Allyson is the daughter of Melvin and Dr. Linda Lumpkin.
