The Bainbridge-Decatur County Humane Society kicked off their 'Pennies for Paws' drive at West Bainbridge Elementary School on Tuesday August 21st. The program not only raises much needed funds for the shelter but also educates the children on how to care for their pets.

Suzy and Frank Loeffler interacted with the kindergarten through second graders about the care of their pets. The topics covered the basic needs of the animals and also dangers. They also had special visitors, Spaz, a bottle feed puppy and Buger, the kitten. They were brought in by shelter supervisor Brandi Turbeville.

Next the children were told about the 'Pennies for Paws' drive. The challenge is for each class to collect their pennies and other coins. After 2 weeks, the class with the most money collected wins an ice cream party. When the drive for all the schools is over, the school that has raised the most money will have a plague with their name on it at the shelter.

According to Suzy Loeffler, it costs over $190,000 to run the shelter. The City of Bainbridge provides $78,000 each year toward that cost and the remainder comes from donations.
